The Department for International Trade (DIT) is an international economic department that secures UK and global prosperity by promoting and financing international trade and investment, and championing free trade. The department is responsible for delivering a new trade policy framework for the UK as we leave the EU, and promoting British trade and investment across the world. DIT brings policy, promotion and financial expertise together to break down barriers to trade and investment, and help businesses succeed. DIT’s overseas network operates in 108 countries.

An opportunity has arisen for an exceptional candidate in the role of Head of Strategic Marketing Communications for DIT China, to provide strategic leadership and vision which inspires and enables first class marketing, PR and communications solutions and effective contract management that drive increased investments and exports.  This is a demanding, multi faceted role in a priority and complex market. The successful candidate will have gravitas and credibility to influence senior stakeholders across government, business in both China and the U.K and suppliers; be able to forge dynamic marcomm relationships in China; further develop highly effective global marcomm connections with HQ London colleagues and other priority markets; and understand opportunities in China where we can use commercial relationships to deliver greatest value.

We are seeking an exceptional leader to be DIT China Head of Strategic Marketing and Communications at a time of unparalleled opportunity and challenge. We are looking for someone who has relevant experience from working in complex and large organisations. As a new department of state, DIT has evolving marketing, communication and commercial needs, both internal and external. We need a talented individual who will be able to lead the team through this, someone who will embrace and respond to emerging demands and expectations with flexibility, pace and flair. And inspire others likewise.

We need someone who will build on the solid foundations established and drive the marcomm strategy forward by working closely with HMG and other UK partners. Someone with energy and experience who can manage and maintain transformative change within and across marcomms functions. Someone with an unrelenting focus on delivering the best possible marcomms services that truly enable the commercially focused teams to succeed. Someone with the resilience and tenacity to excel in a complex and challenging environment that is often at the forefront of ministerial attention. The job holder will also be responsible for ensuring tight commercial controls on contracts with our suppliers to meet strategic priorities.

Strategic Leadership 30%: Lead the DIT China Marketing and Communications team to ensure that the team understand departmental strategic priorities and apply these with impact in the delivery of marcomms solutions. Demonstrate political awareness, connectivity and acuity in liaison with senior stakeholders and partners. Ensure that all marcomms resources are focused on the delivery of the highest value events and missions that offer the greatest potential for delivering increased investments and exports, offer great VFM and compelling ROI by applying the mantra ‘Fewer, better, bigger.’

Relationship Management 20%: Develop and implement close ASEAN and global relationships, including with the delivery partner China Britain Business Council (CBBC), to enable delivery of dynamic campaigns. Ensure global connectedness of DIT China campaigns with HMG colleagues in China, DIT colleagues in UK, other country marketing teams. Build and maintain strong strategic relationships with DIT Directors, sector teams and cross China network senior stakeholders to ensure requirements are met, including actively leading and collaborating on both corporate and network wide initiatives.

Resource and Financial Accountability 10%:  Drive Strategic business planning through to campaign execution by creating high levels of engagement with senior stakeholders that ensures strategic marcomms thinking is front and centre of planning and that robust evidence based bidding is achieved. Responsible for the diverse and geographically spread team and marcomms budget of c £3m (less staffing costs) plus c £500k committed spend with CBBC. Ensure that robust metrics are in place that monitor and measure all marcomms activity effectiveness to demonstrate strong VFM and ROI.

Sponsorship and Contract Management 20%: Responsible for ensuring that effective and efficient Sponsorship, Procurement and Contract Management systems and processes are in place to maximise Sponsorship Acquisition and the cost effective use of production, PR agencies and delivery partner services as appropriate. Ensure that robust governance frameworks are in place, understood and adhered to and that effective internal communication strategies and plans are in place to keep colleagues informed.

Professionalise the service 20%: in line with government best practice communication service criteria and inspire a wider culture across DIT China that elevates marcomms thinking and skills. Define the professional performance bar and motivate high performance that inspires the best from your talented and diverse team. Use first class leadership that encourages personal and professional growth, which as well as maintaining and developing marcomms professional skills includes developing wider civil service skills

  • Significant senior management-level experience in marketing communications gained within a B2B environment.
  • Demonstrable track record of success in developing and implementing impactful communication strategies.
  • Experience of working in an international or global business environment.
  • Experience using the Microsoft Office suite of products.
  • Education to degree level or equivalent professional qualification required.
  • Fluent in English, both written and spoken.
  • Global connections in the marketing communications industry.
  • Experience of marketing communications in China.
  • Knowledge of CRM.
  • Professional marketing qualification.
  • Mandarin language skills.
