View Vacancy - CPK - Newton Fund Programme Manager, C4L (Internal Vacancy)
The Research Councils are the largest funders of academic research in the UK. RCUK China is a small, high performing team and our overall aim is to enhance RCUK-China research funding partnerships. The RCUK-China portfolio of work has increased significantly with the initiation of the Newton Fund and it is important that we have a highly skilled programme manager and negotiator to deliver joint UK-China objectives. The Newton Fund forms part of the UK’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) commitment which focuses on outcomes that promote the long-term sustainable growth of China.
This position will be a 6 month maternity cover and will have responsibility for:
- Implementation of RCUK China activities to enable collaborative working between the UK Research Councils (RCUK) and Chinese research funding organisations, especially academic peer review processes
- With other colleagues in RCUK China, negotiate with Chinese funding agencies to implement joint peer review processes for Newton Fund activities
- Organising workshops and events, in particular a major week of activities to celebrate UK-China research and innovation partnerships, and other events that support the implementation and communication of research
- Advising and informing the RCUK China team and Newton Fund colleagues on research outcomes, policies and developments, including briefings on the Chinese research landscape
- Maintain relationships with relevant UK and Chinese Government partners to support the objectives of RCUK China and the Newton Fund
- Plan and facilitate workshops, meetings, conferences, visits or other events including management of budgets, venues, agendas and contracts
- Report on outcomes of events and meetings and share knowledge effectively with the RCUK China team and Newton Fund colleagues
- Produce briefings on research sectors and UK or Chinese science policy developments to support information sharing across the Newton Fund team and work closely with colleagues to disseminate the outcomes of joint research projects effectively
- Excellent all round education including a university degree
- Proven excellent written and verbal communication skills in both English and Chinese
- Confident in communicating verbally with external and internal contacts at all levels of seniority
- Ability to influence, persuade and negotiate with stakeholders on matters of considerable substance, through individual contact and/or committees
- Experience of managing projects and organising events proactively with minimal supervision
- Experience working in a multicultural environment and a diplomatic interpersonal style
- IT skills, especially MS Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel
- Previous experience of working for a research funding organisation and peer review processes will be seen as an advantage
- Knowledge of UK and/or Chinese academic research context, strengths and priorities will be seen as an advantage
- Experience of managing relationships with colleagues working remotely will be seen as an advantage
We offer a competitive package, which includes basic salary, good leave entitlement, and insurance plan, etc. The gross salary (before all deductions) is CNY 27, 396/ month for Chinese Nationals and an abated monthly salary of CNY 35, 742/ month for British Nationals and spouses/ partners (all nationalities) of diplomats who are ‘W’ (diplomatic) visa holders and meet passport criteria.
We also offer excellent development opportunities and a 22-day annual leave entitlement in pro rata.
Conditioned working hours is 35 hours/ week from Monday to Friday and flexible working can be arranged upon personal needs.
