Main purpose of job:

The successful candidate will be part of the Trade Diplomacy Team covering Market Access and Trade Policy (including Digital Trade) in support of Embassy objectives under the Country Business plan.   The officer will work closely with DIT (Department of International Trade) and Economic Diplomacy teams in the Embassy.  

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

Market Access

  • Monitor British companies’ market access issues in Korea: updating the Embassy’s Digital Market Access Service; engaging with UK ( DIT, UKIPO etc.), embassy, business (including BCCK) stakeholders to resolve British companies' market access issues (with support from Senior Market Access Officer)
  • Manage Market Access mailbox, disributing enquiries to the relevant teams members
  • Provide Market access input to bilateral ministerial meetings
  • Identify, track and report on issues around Korea-EU FTA including Korean interests

Trade Policy

  • Monitor media and contribute to reporting to HQ
  • Carry out adhoc trade policy related reporting in support of UK priorities
  • Where necessary, support arrangement of bilateral ministerial meetings and sector Trade committees under the UK-Korea FTA
  • Future EU relationship- Support Trade Policy Counsellor as required in monitoring and transitioning legacy EU Exit related agreements

Budget Management and Administrative Support

  • Help deliver British government funded projects related to Trade Diplomacy Team priorities
  • Support Trade Diplomacy Counsellor with ad hoc team related administrative tasks
  • Lead Trade Diplomacy team’s budget management working with corporate service team
  • Help Senior Officers with logistical arrangements for events and meetings
  • Manage team’s administrative payment process for events/meetings/project funds including PRISM process
  • Experience in international relations and/or trade work
  • Fluent in English and Korean
  • Strong IT literacy
  • Experience of import/export practice or policy
  • Knowledge of Korean commercial legislation and processes
  • Event and customer management skills
  • Budget Management experience

The British Embassy in Seoul offers a full range of L&D opportunities, including learning sets, e-learning and face-to-face classes.  Online courses and on the job learning will form the core of the jobholder’s induction into embassy work and these may be enhanced by an additional induction course in the UK.   Every member of staff is entitled to 5 L&D days per year.

Normal working hours are Monday to Friday, 09:00 – 17:15 (17:00 on Fridays). While some evening work and travel overseas (which might include weekends) and within Korea is required, we promote family-friendly flexible working opportunities, where operational and security needs allow.
