Main purpose of job:

The British Government’s US Network is seeking a Human Resources Officer to lead on employee relations as part of the US Network HR Team based at the British Embassy in Washington, D.C. This position is primarily responsible for conducting employee relations training and investigation to support c.900 staff based in 9 diplomatic missions (and several other locations) across the United States. 

The ideal candidate will be an engaging and collaborative team player who is able to communicate with and influence colleagues at all levels of an organisation. They will have a good grasp of US employment law, the principles of equal opportunity employment within the US, and an understanding of the British Government and its objectives in the US.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

  • Independently investigate, manage, and recommend resolutions in complex employee relations issues across the US Network (including performance management, bullying, harassment, and discrimination. 
  • Working closely with managers, members of staff and employment lawyers in order to achieve positive outcomes.
  • Own the maintenance and drafting of bullying, harassment, and discrimination (BHD) guidance, policies and other products, ensuring compliance with any federal, state or municipal laws and Her Majesty’s Government (HMG) policies.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with colleagues across the US Network and in the UK.
  • Maintain and update all BHD training materials for staff across the US Network. Ensuring e-learning materials are updated as and when required, delivering in-person or virtual training on BHD as required.
  • Identifying and implementing improvements to the US Network’s BHD processes and training.
  • Supporting the induction of new members of staff across the US Network. 
  • Any other duties as required.
  • Experience of working in a people orientated role.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and act with discretion and integrity.
  • Experience of drafting high quality, clearly structured, written work.
  • Proven ability to exercise good judgement and draw sensible and defendable conclusions.
  • Record of providing quality advice on varied, and often complex, subjects.
  • Experience of working in a fast paced environment while delivering excellent customer service.
  • Direct experience of working in HR and, in particular, employee relations.
  • Experience of line management in a variety of settings.

This role is 40 hours a week, but does not require set working hours each day. The nature of the role means the successful candidate will need to engage with colleagues frequently during core business hours, but that can be managed to accommodate personal circumstances.

Come September, jobholder will be expected to come into the Embassy 2-3 days per week (Wednesdays will be mandatory).
