The British Embassy in Azerbaijan is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a Projects Intern to provide administrative, monitoring & evaluating and reporting support to other members of political team in managing their respective programme portfolios. An opportunity to get experience and insight in to the programme management requirements of an Embassy and to learn international best practice.

The two main funds for the British Embassy Baku programming are:

CSSF: the UK’s Conflict, Security and Stability Fund Eastern Partnership (EaP) Programme project portfolio in Azerbaijan delivers against a regional strategy and to British Embassy Baku objectives for Azerbaijan. 

  • The intern will help the project manager deliver best practice in project management, following CSSF guidance, and delivering exemplary value-for-money, a robust approach to risk including gender and conflict sensitivity across the portfolio.
  • The intern will work closely with the wider EaP regional team based in Tbilisi as well as colleagues in the British Embassy in Baku.   

International Programme (IPs)

  • The intern will support the project manager in identifying opportunities to deliver towards the IP’s key objectives of public sector reform, rule of law, environmental issues, independent media, economic reform and judicial reform.
  • The intern will accompany the project manager for both the CSSF and IP programming to monitoring and evaluating assessments to ensure value for money.

Roles and responsibilities:

The successful candidate will work as part of a dynamic political section, helping to deliver UK foreign policy objectives in Azerbaijan and promote UK values. 

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist in managing a range of projects that deliver against the UK Government’s regional strategy and post objectives

Day-to-day project management that includes:

  • Assisting in developing project proposals, completing due diligence and safeguarding procedures with implementers.  Assisting in carrying out and recording the monitoring and evaluation of projects, reporting results and managing risk and financial compliance auditing;
  • Familiarisation with CSSF and IP guidance so the job-holder is able to ensure the programmes remain compliant of their respective standards guidelines e.g. in risk management, gender and conflict sensitivity as well as delivering value-for-money across the portfolio;
  • Assist in developing and meeting with relevant contacts to scope out potential programming opportunities and also explore what other donors are supporting in Azerbaijan;
  • Arrange meetings for Political section team members and accompany to meetings to produce written meeting notes and interpretation;
  • Provide local insight and reporting in to current affairs;
  • Support in necessary admin activities;
  • Occasionally ready to work on the out of office hours or on weekends in exchange for time off in lieu;
  • Attend relevant conferences/briefings and report back findings to the Political Section;
  • Help cover other political team members duties during absences/busy periods.

 

 

  • Fluent written and spoken English, Azerbaijan (minimum level required C1 under the CEFR or equivalent*);
  • Currently enrolled or already attained University Degree, ideally in international relations, peace and security or a relevant subjects;
  • At least 1 year of experience of project management/implementation, or prior experience in university project management activities;
  • A keen and demonstrable interest in project management or implementation;
  • A keen and demonstrable interest in current affairs and domestic and international politics;
  • Strong communication and administrative skills, and experience of working in a team;
  • Analytical skills;
  • An eagerness to test their ability in new pieces of work;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Proactive self-starter;
  • Good team player;
  • Ability to work under pressure, prioritise and handle multitasks;
  • Strong IT skills, in particular Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel.
  • A good network of contacts across government, civil society and NGOs;
  • Budget management experience;
  • A qualification in Project management;
  • Experience of working in or with an international organisation or civil society.

This is a full-time temporary position, five working days, 40 hours net per week.

The salary is 843.04 USD gross per month and shall be paid in AZN monthly.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Azerbaijan is subject to Terms and Conditions of Service of the FCDO according to local labour legislation.
