The British Embassy in Lisbon is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. The British Embassy’s communications team is recruiting for a Digital Officer. The jobholder will play a key part in promoting UK interests in Portugal, enhancing our reputation and strengthening links between the two countries. The successful candidate will work closely with colleagues across the Embassy to develop and implement high impact digital content in support of UK priorities. Analysis, monitoring and evaluation will be important, as will technical skills and a creative approach.

Roles and responsibilities:


We are looking for a creative, motivated and experienced individual to lead the Embassy’s digital communications activities, to achieve maximum impact across a range of social media and other digital means.  The jobholder will play a key role in communicating UK priorities in Portugal.

We are looking for someone who will drive innovative and creative new ideas, develop engaging and native content (in English and Portuguese) and expand our online presence on Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn etc.   Routine evaluation and in-depth audience perception will be critical. Technical skills (social media management platforms, video and image production, experience of running digital campaigns with landing pages and multichannel advertising, and working with digital influencers and agencies) will be highly valued.

The jobholder will act as consultant across the wider embassy team to other colleagues, including seniors, to ensure digital best practice is shared and implemented. The successful applicant should therefore be a good team player and ready to work across a range of different embassy priorities.

 

The jobholder will divide their time as follows:

Work with Embassy colleagues to ensure that Embassy events and campaigns include a strong digital element and maximise digital media impact. Ensure digital comms strategy is fully aligned with wider comms strategy and embassy’s country plan. Contacts with external agencies to ensure correct delivery of digital campaigns.

Manage Embassy social media accounts (Twitter and Instagram) on a day to day basis. Produce and curate engaging contents. Deal with enquiries and community management.. This will include advising the Ambassador regarding social media and providing technical support.  Monitor and evaluate impact, evolving and developing approach accordingly.  Support other colleagues managing other accounts, eg consular team on Facebook and wider team on LinkedIn.

Champion digital across the Embassy and share best practice with colleagues in the immediate team and beyond, linking up with centres of digital excellence in London, Madrid and across Europe.

  • Full professional proficiency in English and Portuguese (written and spoken, minimum of C1 level for CEFR framework*);
  • Minimum two years experience working in a digital communications environment;
  • Demonstrable creative approach to developing, implementing and evaluating digital media activities;
  • Photography, video and design skills;
  • Knowledge of social media management platforms;
  • Excellent understanding of writing for digital, both in English and Portuguese, adaptable to different styles;
  • Practical experience of using social media to extend reach of an organisation including through digital campaigns;
  • Proactive, and demonstrating ability to work effectively both on own initiative and as part of a team;
  • Good MS Office skills;
  • Good communication skills, attention to detail;
  • Excellent time management and ability to perform to deadlines;
  • Flexibility and personal resilience.
  • BA in Digital Marketing or Communications;
  • Strong intercultural skills and/or knowledge of UK;
  • Experience working with comms agencies.

This is a full-time, permanent contract subject to a 180 days probation period for 5 working days, with working patterns: 35 working hours per week – Monday to Friday 9-17h flexible (Embassy staff currently work in a hybrid mode with some days working from home and a few in the office).

NOTE: This position's work hours may vary due to the selected candidate's participation in many different events and campaign organisation.

Learning and development opportunities: There are lots of formal and informal opportunities. The Embassy has an active L&D group (role specific training to be provided such as Line Management Course)

The British Embassy in Lisbon aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role of € 27,861.82 gross annual salary paid in fourteen instalments; plus a monthly meal allowance of €134.00. This salary is payable if the successful candidate is subject to individual income tax (IRS) in Portugal on the employment income in question. If the successful candidate is not subject to individual income tax (IRS) on their employment income in Portugal, and/or is not taxable elsewhere on such income, he / she will receive the above salary minus a reference amount approximate to the level of Portuguese tax that would be applicable if the income were subject to tax locally. Further information on this will be given to candidates during the recruitment process.

All staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Portugal are subject to local Portuguese Employment Law as well as internal regulations in force at any given time.

The successful candidate will be subject to a professional background and security clearance and must have pre-existing work authorisation for Portugal in order to apply.
