The British Embassy in Albania is part of a worldwide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas, and is now looking for an independent, dynamic and well-organised Pro Consul on a three-month contract to provide summer relief cover from June 2023. The successful candidate will have prior experience in customer service, and ensure a high quality, professional, efficient and modern consular service to British people living in and visiting Albania and Kosovo. As a Pro Consul, you will be working for the British Embassy Tirana reporting to the Vice Consul. You will manage and deliver consular support, in a team of three with two of them working remotely. The Consular team in Albania is part of the wider Europe South Consular region.

The successful candidate will contribute to wider consular objectives and Embassy priorities and support its positive working environment and actively participate in learning and development opportunities.

Albania attracts a considerable number of UK visitors during summer season. The main function of the role is to support the Vice Consul with consular assistance cases for British nationals in Albania and Kosovo, focusing on the most vulnerable. The role will also require delivering documentary, notarial services and administrative tasks.

Consular work is challenging and very rewarding.  Candidates should note that the different functions of the role will require the candidate to adapt to shifting priorities and operational objectives, whilst maintaining a commitment to excellent customer service.

This position may require flexibility in working hours and in rare cases you may be asked to provide remote assistance out-of-hours (TOIL will be provided).

 

Key responsibilities will include:

Assistance

  • To provide support to the Vice Consul in assisting British Nationals and their families in a range of situations, such as in cases of hospitalisations, deaths, arrests, rape and sexual assault, financial difficulties, missing persons, welfare and child welfare cases;
  • To update information on case management systems relating to consular cases in a timely and efficient manner;
  • To support the Emergency Travel Document Centre by printing Emergency Travel Documents;
  • To manage the online appointments booking system as well as perform administrative duties;
  • To work alongside internal departments of the FCDO’s Consular Directorate, including the Contact Centres, ETD Centres and the Global Response Centre to deliver assistance to British Nationals;
  • On occasion, provide remote support to colleagues in the wider Balkans and Eastern Adriatic consular network.

 

Notarial

  • To prepare paperwork for documentary and notarial services;
  • To prepare notarial documents for British Nationals in accordance with FCDO guidance for onward signature by the Vice Consul;
  • To take fees and be responsible for cashier duties.

 

Crisis

  • To actively participate in crisis training opportunities, in order to be able to assist with Embassy crisis preparedness and response.
  • Fluency in English and Albanian at C level according to CEFR Framework (spoken and written) *;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; both written and oral, including the ability to communicate at all levels and an ability to support customers in difficult and traumatic situations;
  • Previous experience in a customer-facing role and the ability to respond to a wide range of customer needs;
  • 1-2 years of relevant work experience (to include working with the public). Excellent customer focus using problem solving and judgement skills to deliver results within set deadlines; superb attention to detail, and an ability to work effectively and proactively without close supervision;
  • Proven ability to prioritise a busy workload, effectively manage and execute multiple tasks, and work to deadlines and targets;
  • Proficient IT skills, in particular Office 365 applications;
  • Flexibility, resilience, patience and the ability to confidently deal with difficult situations, including in an emergency or crisis;
  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of discretion and responsibility.
  • Knowledge of the UK and/or Albanian administrative, justice and legal systems and social services.

This is for a full-time employment, on a fixed term basis for 3 months.

The gross salary per month is ALL 134,826.

This is a full-time position of 5 days (36 hours net per week). Embassy working hours are from 08.30-17:00 Mon-Thu and 08.30-14:30 on Fridays. 

The Embassy supports the work-life balance of its employees and is open to flexible working.

No accommodation and relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.

The successful candidate must have the right to live and work in Albania.

The successful candidate will be required to pass a language skills test and undergo security clearance before commencing the role.

The successful candidate will be subject to a professional background check and security clearance - local and international ‘Vetting’ process will be performed to the successful candidate.
