The United Kingdom’s Joint Delegation to NATO is the vital link between the UK Government and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. Its principal roles are to promote British interests in NATO and to keep UK Ministers and Government Departments informed about NATO discussions and is now looking for a Policy Officer for the UK Delegation to NATO in Brussels (UKDEL).

The main purpose of the job would be to further UK strategic interests within NATO. The job holder will be responsible for securing UK objectives on a range of security and defence policy issues in NATO, liaising with the FCO and MOD to formulate UK positions before negotiating these in NATO Committee meetings.

UKDEL NATO sits at the heart of UK Defence. Its work is valued highly by FCO and MOD Ministers alike.

The job holder will work in a delegation dealing with the largest range of challenges NATO has faced since the end of the Cold War, with conflict in Syria, Islamic State terrorism and a resurgent and non-compliant Russia.

As with all jobs in the Delegation, we promote an adaptable and responsive approach, which means the job is likely to evolve over time to deal with changing circumstances and priorities. We can ensure that it will be fast-moving and enjoyable, with plenty of scope for policy development and delivery and will offer a great opportunity at the heart of a delegation delivering core foreign, defence and security aims for HMG.

Main Duties / Responsibilities:

The job holder will focus on NATO’s Projecting Stability activities: co-operating with regional partners and international organisations to strengthen security outside NATO territory.

  • Policy Development: Analysing issues, understanding other countries’ positions and formulating policy;
  • Negotiating and influencing: Working with a range of actors to deliver UK policy goals; building strong and resilient personal relationships with other delegations and the NATO staff;
  • Project Management: Lead/monitor and coordinate working level delivery of several country-related partnership and assistance projects;
  • Improving the Mission: Contributing on a variety of activity to improve UKDEL NATO’s effectiveness.
  • Fluent written and spoken English;

  • Education to university level;

  • IT literacy (particularly MS Office tools);

  • Strong influencing, communicating and networking skills;

  • Ability to work as part of a team and autonomously;

  • Ability to work on multiple tasks under pressure and meet deadlines;

  • Strong interpersonal skills;

  • Previous experience in an international environment (2 years preferably);

  • Previous experience in partnering with external stakeholders;

  • Experience of working in a policy field.

  • Experience and/or interest in International Relations;
  • Knowledge of NATO and UK Government institutions and procedures;
  • Programme management experience;
  • Understanding of written and spoken French;
  • Security/ Defence professional background.

This is a full-time, permanent contract, for 5 working days (36.25 hours net) per week.

The monthly salary for this position is €4,747.11, C4 (L) level (The British Diplomatic Missions in Belgium salaries are not subject to annual indexation).

Please note that Belgian nationals will be paid their salary gross and are expected to comply with their tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the Belgian authorities. Non-Belgian nationals will receive their salary net, minus the deduction of an equivalent level of Belgian tax retained at source. Further information on this will be given to candidates during the recruitment process.

The successful candidates will be subject to professional background checks and security clearance.
