Main purpose of job:

We are seeking an experienced communications professional to cover the 6-month maternity leave of our current Communications and Public Diplomacy manager, starting in August 2017. This position will be based at the British Consulate in Sao Paulo and report to the Deputy Head of Communications.

The successful candidate will work on an exciting, dynamic and fast-paced environment, being challenged to plan and deliver ambitious communications strategies to protect, project and promote the UK in Brazil, aligned with the overall objectives of the British Mission in Brazil, with a particular emphasis on the Trade and Investment agendas.

The Communications Manager will deploy communications activities to support the GREAT Britain and the Global Britain campaigns, always engaging with partners and in close liaison with the Marketing team, the wider communications sector across the Country and the Head Quarters in London.

Roles and responsibilities: 

The successful candidate will:

  • Provide high-level communications advice to senior managers (both proactive and reactive), including working on key messages, briefing and coaching them for interviews, speeches and external/internal presentations.
  • Build on the relationship with key Brazilian media outlets and key influencers to promote UK’s agenda in Brazil, aligned with the overarching communications strategy.
  • Develop strategic communications plans (including press and digital engagement) and implement creative and effective actions to disseminate UK Government’s key messages to Brazilian audiences during high level dialogues and ministerial/VIP visits to Brazil.
  • Implement the communications plan for the Department for International Trade in Brazil, supporting the UK Government’s business vision in the country in its priority commercial sectors, in close liaison with the Marketing team.
  • Report results, based on Key Performance Indicators and against SMART Communications objectives.
  • Provide basics PR work, such as contact with journalists (national and international), follow up, press releases etc.
  • Lead and support events to promote the UK in Brazil, going beyond the business as usual to attract relevant audiences, including thinking creatively on photo opportunities, digital, branding and other activities, in close liaison with teams.
  • Be an active member of the staff, participating in meetings and setting corporate objective(s) to contribute to the internal agenda.
  • Support teams, providing communications advice when needed, proof reading texts and safeguarding the GREAT Britain campaign brand.
  • Work proactively on forming new relationships and contacts with an eye to increasing UK engagement and influence through traditional and social medias.
  • Support digital engagement activities across the UK in the Brazil Network, including the implementation of digital tools for external and internal communications.
  • Deal with administrative tasks, including contact with suppliers and financial management.
  • Give full support to the Head and Deputy Head of Communications and undertake other duties that may reasonably be required and which are in accordance with the grading and core competencies of the job.

 

Resources managed:

  • A team of two in Sao Paulo, one Assistant and one Intern. 
  • Hold a university degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations or a relevant field. 
  • Full proficiency in both Portuguese and English (including effective presentation skills and proof reading).
  • A good understanding of Brazilian media.
  • A strong interest in International Relations.
  • A proven track-record in the delivery of high impact, innovative and strategic communications.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, management skills, autonomy, and good attention to detail and be a strong team-player.  
  • Confident, able to form effective relationships quickly both within and outside the organisation and be confident in dealing with a range of contacts at all levels.
  • The job requires flexibility, commitment, confidentiality, willingness and ability to deal with multiple tasks.
  • Experience working in a private sector marketing team or communications agency environment.
