Main purpose of job:

The British Embassy Bamako is part of a worldwide network, representing British political, economic, and consular interests overseas. The British Government’s new Africa Strategy, announced by the Prime Minister in 2018, will see an uplift in British diplomatic presence in the Sahel. This includes a significant expansion of staff numbers and of the estate at British Embassy Bamako. The Corporate Services Team is essential to the smooth running of the Embassy – both for business as usual and during the planned changes. Alongside your specific portfolios, you will support the Head of Corporate Services in giving the Team strategic leadership and in developing staff. Your overall objective will be to achieve value for money and greater efficiency across the Embassy.

Roles and responsibilities:

You will be required to resolve complex technical and/or managerial problems, while ensuring that you have full visibility of all corporate delivery, ensuring Health and Safety requirements are met at all times. You will provide leadership of the team, reporting to the Head of Corporate Services and Deputy Head of Mission by recommending actions and solutions to get the work done in priority order. You will cover for the Head of Corporate Services in their absence, in particular working with the Embassy’s senior management, and colleagues in the regional Corporate Hubs. 

Your main duties will include:

Estate Management:

  • Oversight of the Embassy estate including the office, Ambassador’s Residence, and UK staff accommodation, and supervision of the Estate Manager, ensuring all properties are fit for purpose with good health and safety standards.
  • Sourcing and securing suitable residential properties and/or overseeing a project to adapt existing properties.
  • Tasking of repairs to high standards, deliver a high quality of customer service, across the Residential and office accommodation.
  • Recommending and costing any necessary repairs or alterations to properties to meet health and safety requirements.

Transport Management:

  • Responsibility for the Embassy fleet of vehicles, supervision of the Transport Manager who is responsible for daily ensuring maintenance to the highest possible standard.
  • Management of the team of drivers, including they are trained and operating safely and efficiently.
  • Working closely with the Embassy Security team where appropriate.

Budget Management:

  • Delivering value for money and effective use of the Estate and Transport budgets and resources to support Embassy objectives.
  • Provide up to date information on spend, to the Finance team to ensure accurate forecasting and accounting.

Crisis preparedness: You will play a key role in ensuring that the Embassy is fully prepared for any crisis, coordinating preparedness across CST and taking the lead on logistics.

Resources managed (staff and expenditure):

  • Staff structures are subject to change as the Embassy expands but it is likely you will have responsibility for direct management of three individuals and oversight of six others.
  • Experience of managing a team for a minimum of 3 years.
  • Proven interpersonal and communications skills with a strong delivery in a customer facing role.
  • Proven background on resource management, and operational delivery.
  • Experience with computers especially Word-processing and spreadsheets
  • Ability to prioritise and deliver high quality results on multiple areas of competing work to tight deadlines
  • Previous experience of corporate services, estates, or management work.
  • Previous experience of working for an Embassy or other international organisation

The British Embassy encourages a learning and development culture.

Working patterns:

Embassy working hours are 0800-1630 Mon-Thu and 0800-1230 Fri. At the moment it is not possible to work remotely, though some site visits might be required as may visits to contractors or suppliers.
