Main purpose of job:

The Senior Security Officer responsible for the day to day supervision of a guard force of 8 Security Officers responsible for 24/7 security guarding, and weekday public reception duties, at the UK Government Offices in New York.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

  • Lead on the supervision and day-to-day management of site security at the UK Government Offices in New York.
  • Line manage 8 x Security Officers who are working the 24/7 shift roster covering day guards, receptionist and night/ weekend guard duties.
  • Manage shift rosters and other staff management duties such as training, team-building, standards etc.
  • Manage procedures and standards around security patrols and routines, logs and checks, management of passes, access control including freight elevator access, locks and keys and security equipment.
  • Liaison with Building management on security management and security concerns.
  • Ensure procedures and responsibilities for the guards are implemented to a consistent and high-standard.
  • Provide support to the Post Security Manager on key security management policy and procedure, on personnel security and vetting staff and on administration of security assets, registers and logs etc where required.
  • Provide cover & resilience for Security Officers at the public Receptions, in escorting contractors and other security guard duties in the offices at times of absence, during breaks and busy periods.
  • Support, as necessary on security at events and with high-level visitors.
  • Provide security support to the UK Government offices crisis and business continuity planning work.
  • Other ad hoc tasks as directed by both the Regional Overseas Security Manager and Post Security Manager.

Resources managed (staff and expenditure):

8 X Security Officers

  • At least 4 years work experience in the security sector/ law enforcement/ military, ideally office-based.
  • Excellent people engagement skills and first-rate customer service, including a proven track-record in dealing with members of the public.
  • Ideally, experience of working a public reception.
  • A high degree of professionalism and strong ability to represent the UK government externally to visitors and other members of the public.
  • Adaptable, flexible and energetic; ability to work well in a team and to work collaboratively to deliver shared tasks and help others.
  • Experience of managing a security team/ security guards.
  • Proven experience of Microsoft Windows 10 suite, including Outlook, Word, Excel and Teams - as well as bespoke IT security, access control & CCTV systems.
  • Must be fluent in spoken and written English.
  • Must be a British, US, Canadian, Australian or New Zealand citizen.
  • Must be of exemplary character, and have the utmost integrity and professionalism. Full background checks and vetting procedure is carried out.
  • Current holder of New York Security Guard Licence an advantage.
  • Previous experience of working in the Diplomatic community, especially if in New York, is helpful.
  • Previous experience of office facilities work is useful but not essential.
  • Local knowledge of New York useful.

This role will be at the British Consulate General and UKMIS government offices in New York. 

Working patterns:

The contract is for 40 hours per week, working Mon-Fri, 8-5pm. There will be occasions when it is expected to be available to help cover workmen, contractors etc. outside of these hours and to help cover any SO shifts for vacation, or sickness due to SO shortages. This includes evening, weekend and public holiday periods.
