The British Embassy in Paris is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Paralegal Assistant to join the Crown Prosecution Team.

The British Government have funded a Criminal Justice Advisor (CJA) to work within France to develop collaboration in organised immigration crime with a view to opening investigations, dismantling networks, prosecuting offenders and pursuing the proceeds of crime. That post is based in Paris but involves frequent travel across France including Boulogne, Calais, Dunkirk, Lille, Dieppe, Bordeaux, Rennes and further afield depending on cases of interest.

The advertised position of a paralegal assistant, based in the British Embassy in Paris, is to provide high-level support through the undertaking of a range of tasks for the CJA, to support engagement with stakeholders in the criminal justice system and to support the successful and timely collaboration often in real time in order to support UK/FR operations. The role will involve legal research and therefore legal or law enforcement experience is essential. There will be a degree of autonomy in the role with an expectation to review, analyse and progress work streams, identify improvements to process and take forward implementation on behalf of CJA.

The role is open to anyone with the independent right to reside and work in the France. The role will involve close collaboration with UK Government stakeholders including National Crime Agency (NCA), Home Office Immigration Enforcement (HOIE), United Kingdom Central Authority (UKCA) and Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) as well as key French partners so excellent interpersonal skills are essential. A strong stakeholder focus is required. The applicant must be articulate and demonstrate initiative and the ability to work without supervision. Organisational skills are essential, as well as accuracy and an attention to detail.

The role will be subject to the necessary security clearance.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • External liaison building and maintaining close working relationships with UK law enforcement and representatives across France amongst law enforcement and criminal justice system;
  • Maintaining confidentiality in all areas of work;
  • Effectively communicating and managing relationships with a wide and diverse range of stakeholders displaying efficiency and sensitivity;
  • Effectively managing resources and being accountable to the budget holder for expenditure incurred;
  • Maintaining and supporting effective working relationships with managers and colleagues;
  • Managing CJA diary appointments including organising meetings, preparing and distributing agendas, briefing papers and minutes;
  • Organising conferences and events for internal and external partners;
  • Making travel arrangements and arranging accommodation for CJA;
  • Managing the office in the absence of the CJA, handling enquiries or referring onwards as appropriate;
  • Translation and provision of accurate and timely documents and providing linguistic support;
  • High level of autonomy in exercising functions;
  • Researching legal and non-legal topics as required and presenting the findings logically and coherently;
  • Providing administrative support in maintaining casework records and statistics for reporting purposes;
  • Prepare monthly/quarterly reports/updates;
  • Case management of UK Mutual legal assistance (MLA) and extradition requests including initial review and triage;
  • Delivering project work to enhance bi-lateral cooperation and progress UK priorities;

 

 

  • Excellent written and oral English and French;
  • Legal or law enforcement experience;
  • Excellent interpersonal & communication skills;
  • Organisational skills with ability to demonstrate initiative, autonomy and self-motivation;
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and projects at pace;
  • IT skills including MS Office;
  • Self-starter, able to work independently as well as part of a team;
  • Results driven with excellent attention to detail;

This is a full-time, fixed-term contract for 18 months, 35 hours per week.

Start date expected 10 September 2018, however, the jobholder should be available to start as soon as possible.
