Main Purpose of Role 

This is a challenging and rewarding role based in New York supporting the Regional Director with the leadership and management of the 25 person trade and investment team. The role supports the Regional Director with identifying trade and investment opportunities across the consular district, leads on regional activities, and will work on a wide variety of policy and economic initiatives. You will apply your expertise to support the development of strategies that amplify our impact using key networks across the New York patch, seeking to influence trade policy. You will lead on senior level, Ministerial visits, oversee key account management and support on management and coordination of the wider team.

The ideal candidate will be a clear/effective communicator, a team player able to work at pace whilst paying strong attention strong attention to detail with a background in international business.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Build an understanding of and expertise in the trade and investment opportunity in each of the states, Congressional Districts and cities within the consular patch to inform the overall regional strategy.
  • Advise the Consul General and Regional Director on senior relationships they should build locally with key stakeholders to help drive forward UK trade and investment priorities and to influence views on trade policy and the UK.
  • Work with marketing, communications and prosperity colleagues to refine and deliver messaging that showcases the strength of the UK-US trade and investment relationship and is targeted at influential audiences.
  • Lead business-related key account management across the local TI team, including owning a portfolio of accounts, to build a comprehensive picture of trade & investment opportunities, challenges and opinions in the region.
  • Support the Regional Director by working with other HMG and network colleagues to design and deliver impactful visit programmes and events for HMTC, HMA, British Ministers and other senior visitors and ensure they understand the regional views on trade and how best to establish the UK as trade and investment partner of choice.
  • Provide and approve all briefing for senior leadership ahead of visits, meetings and events and maintain core trade and investment script for the NY region.
  • Support Regional Director with recruitment, on-boarding and team development activities to strengthen and reinforce trade promotion expertise in the consular patch.
  • Support Regional Director with management and running of local trade and investment team.
  • Support the Regional Director in establishing ambitious trade objectives for the regional the oversight of performance against, liaising with central operations functions. 

Resources managed (staff and expenditure):

Support Regional Director with leadership of 25 person trade and investment team including line management of 3-4 Trade and Investment Officers.


Essential:

  • Postgraduate degree and/or undergraduate degree (or equivalent professional experience).
  • 5-7 years professional experience, gained within a business, government or economic development role.
  • Proven competence in strategy development and business planning.
  • Proven advisory and influencing skills at senior levels – able to express ideas and messages clearly and concisely, both orally and in written communication.
  • Proven client engagement skills and the ability to represent an organisation to high profile executives.
  • An understanding of international relations, UK Government policy.
  • An understanding of both the US and UK business environments and investment proposition.
  • Ability to influence others and gain buy-in at the team, peer and executive level.
  • Proven experience delivering creative and innovative solutions to business challenges.
  • Excellent interpersonal, presentation and networking skills, and highly effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • The ability to attend official functions outside of office hours; and the ability to undertake domestic and international air travel, including overnight stays.

Language requirements:

Language: English

Level of language required:  Fluent oral and written English.  

Desirable Skills:

  • An in-depth knowledge of the NY, NJ, PA and CT economies.

Working patterns:  

This role is full time - 40 hours a week including some evenings and occasional travel. We are able to accommodate a varied working pattern with flexible start times.

The British Embassy and its US Network embraces hybrid working, allowing its staff to typically work from home 2 or 3 times a week.  We are an organization that also recognises the critical value of team work and we embrace and endorse collaboration by ensuring that all staff attend the office flexibly yet regularly. 

This role is customer facing and therefore requires some core hours but also requires contact with colleagues in different time zones.
