Main purpose of job:

To attract, retain & add value to Australian companies with UK expansion ambitions, specifically, the job holder will provide business set-up assistance, sector information and expansion support to both new and existing scale-up and SME businesses.


The job holder will report to the Senior Business Relationship Manager and form part of a wider network at the Department for International Trade, the British Consulate General and the British High Commission in Canberra.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

This exciting and engaging role requires identification and provision of strategic support for innovative Australian companies with globally scalable products or services. It involves formulating and executing strategies aimed at generating leads for Australian scaleup and SME businesses operating in technology, financial and professional services, health and life sciences and other sectors seeking to expand into the UK.

You will have expertise in strategy, marketing, planning and execution. The jobholder will work with the Senior Business Relations Manager to develop a business plan to target high-growth businesses to attract them to the UK. The business plan will also carry a small provision targeting UK companies interested in exporting to Australia . In creating and delivering the business plan you will liaise with teams in DIT’s London HQ, marketing and communications teams in Australia and our wider regional Asia Pacific Team where appropriate and required.  

The role will also require attendance at events, relationship building at industry forums and require the ability to communicate effectively. An ability to network, establish strong relations with the scaleup ecosystem, internal and external stakeholders and other industry multipliers to actively support and leverage outcomes is essential. Experience with account management, event curation, project management, relationship management, and administration will be an asset. 

The role will include an element of travel to visit companies as well as for learning and development. 

Essential to the role will be the ability to communicate information and marketing materials to each company. The role requires collaboration through a virtual team structure in Australia and New Zealand (colleagues are located in Perth, Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney, Brisbane, Wellington and Auckland), with UK based sector team colleagues, UK regional team colleagues, and a centralised investment services team – who each play a supporting role to the jobholder providing introductions, economic data and research.

A management function will also require sound administration and accountability for accurate budget forecasting and acquitting expenses in line with value for money and policy. Occasional management of interns may be required. 

Resources managed (staff and expenditure): 

The job holder may have a small budget for business activity and travel and support the intern programme.

  • Bachelors degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate field
  • A minimum of  two years’ work experience in business, ideally in an international & B2B context, or in business development.
  • Ability to develop and maintain networks with businesses.
  • Strong inter-personal, networking, presentation and communication skills
  • Good knowledge of the Australian business environment, particularly in relation to scale-ups and SMEs
  •  Ability to deliver to ambitious targets and outcomes
  • Strong research and analytical skills
  • IT literate

Language requirements: 

Language: English 

Level of language required: Fluent 

  • Experience of trade and export activities in a public sector context 
  • Some knowledge of the UK’s business environment.
  • Some knowledge of the processes involved in overseas company expansions (foreign direct Investment in to the UK) 
  • Some knowledge of business decision making processes.

Salary is at AU$ 80,507.00 per annum (paid out monthly), plus 11% superannuation.

Appointment is subject to an AFP records check and UK security clearance.

Working Hours:

Full time employment (38 hrs), with occasional out of working hours events and travel.
