Main purpose of job:

The role of the Senior Business Engagement Advisor is to work with UK and Japanese businesses and business organisations to strengthen trade and economic policy engagement to secure outcomes that benefit UK companies operating in Japan and safeguard Japanese inward investment into the UK. The role also manages a £500k (c. 75m yen) fund in support of the UK’s prosperity objectives in Japan.

Roles and Responsibilities:

-          Engagement with Japanese business organisations, including Keidanren, Keizai Douyukai and sector-specific organisations to influence their members in support of UK trade policy and economic objectives, including a smooth exit from the EU and a new free-trade agreement with Japan.

-          Engagement with UK businesses operating in Japan to encourage coordinated lobbying on our policy objectives and to identify market access barriers. Working with the BCCJ and sector groups to target our lobbying efforts.

-          Policy lobbying in priority sectors to benefit UK companies. Design and implement lobbying strategies (e.g. to address market access barriers), working across the Embassy with sector leads and senior diplomats, and coordinating externally with like-minded chambers of commerce and other business organisations.

-          Manage the £500k Japan Prosperity Fund ensuring good governance and value for money from funded projects in priority sectors across the Embassy, supported by a full-time Prosperity Fund Programme Manager and an Assistant Event Organiser.

-          Experience of engagement with the private sector – ideally both Japanese and UK

-          Fluent Japanese language skills (JLPT level 1 or equivalent)

-          Good level of English (IELTS band 7 or TOEIC 800 points or above or equivalent)

-          Prior experience of UK government or working with UK businesses will be looked upon favourably but is not essential

-          Experience of influencing governments and businesses to achieve a particular policy outcome

-          Experience of running campaigns or overseeing project work

  • Salary: 413,000 yen (note: Salary may be reduced due to tax status)
