Department for International Trade (DIT)

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

India matters to the UK; it is the G7’s fastest growing economy, there are currently more than 840 Indian companies operating in the UK turning over more than £46 billion, and recent figures demonstrate an 18% increase in exports between the two countries.

Do you want to play a critical role in this growth story? Do you want to engage daily with the British High Commission in India, the UK’s largest overseas network? Do you have strong client-facing, project management skills? Do you have a passion for training, and a career path involving Government work? If the answer is yes, please read on.

As the UK Trade Economics and Prosperity (UKTEP) lead for SRM, you will have a critical role in the British High Commission's leadership team. You will drive forward our high-profile work on developing and managing senior (think CXO and senior Government) trade, investment, and prosperity relationships. The work is critical to our Regional Trade Plan, and has recently delivered 50 high-quality account plans. We now need to ensure these have real-world impact. You primary objective will be to develop systems to ensure these accounts are effectively managed towards the best possible outcome for the UK in India. Your audience will be senior UK Government stakeholders (including the High Commissioner, Trade Commissioner and 6 regional Deputy High Commissioners) along with Department for International Trade(DIT)/UK Trade Economics & Prosperity(UKTEP) colleagues and of course business, GoI and wider stakeholders across India. You will also manage a critical provider contract which supports this high-profile work.

Given this, you will need to be creative and think (and act) strategically about our approach to Strategic Relationship Management(SRM) in India. You will need to be a self-starter, with the very best communication, persuasion/influencing and project management skills to make this role a success. You will understand both Indian and UK business drivers, along with dimensions to joint prosperity. You will need a sales-focus to generate new leads and accounts, and a passion for training/L&D to see through the culture change required across the network.

It is an exciting time to be joining the network. The UK has is exiting the European Union and there is stronger focus than ever on our objectives of increasing trade and investment with India. The post is based in either the capital Delhi or Mumbai - the financial, commercial and entertainment capital of India, but you will travel frequently across India and to the UK. You will report to the Deputy Director for DIT based in Delhi

Key tasks:

SRM: You will lead UKTEP’s work on SRM and be the expert point-of-contact. You will identify, access and account-manage senior level relationships with UK and Indian companies, and with key Indian stakeholders and government. As a representative of UK Government, it is critical that you project credibility and have the ability to influence and lobby at the highest levels to achieve your goals.

Contract management: You will lead on the provider contract and workplan on SRM as it moves from the current 50 to a broader number of accounts, supported by a live ranking model that ensures we are smart with resources. You will hold the provider to account for delivery, and ensure vfm for the contract as it progresses

Training and L&D: Through effective, always-switched-on training and L&D you will lead the culture change involved in ensuring UKTEP is a global leader for UK Government on SRM.This means being creative but persistent on processes/systems to keep accounts up-to-date and accurate, ensuring this tool works with the UK Government’s similar systems in DIT London and across Whitehall.

Corporate activity: As a senior member of SMT you will have a corporate responsibility, to be determined, across the network.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (What will the jobholder be expected to achieve?)

Delivering a world-leading prosperity-focussed SRM system across the India network (60%):

You will lead on ensuring systems are procured, and processes established to support the network. You will lead on both training and L&D around SRM, and both develop and have mastery of your own SRM accounts. You will work with DIT colleagues and wider Her Majesty's Government(HMG) partners (including UK Visas & Immigration, Department for International Development, Political teams) to ensure optimal join up on accounts. Crucially you will lead our work on developing a new, interesting tranche of market-access accounts.
