The British Embassy in The Hague, part of a worldwide network of nearly 270 Diplomatic offices, representing British Political, Economic and Consular interests overseas is now looking for a part-time Support Officer to provide administrative support to two teams, led by the Legal Adviser and the Deputy Permanent Representative to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

The successful candidate will be proactive, flexible and possess excellent self-management and inter personal skills. He or she will work with (i) the International Law Team and (ii) the UK Delegation to the OPCW. These teams help to deliver the United Kingdom’s objective to strengthen the rules-based international system and safeguard its national security, in particular by promoting international justice and countering weapons proliferation.

The job holder will have regular interaction with international staff at the OPCW and the international courts and tribunals based in The Hague, and will be an integral member of the wider Embassy team.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Work with external and UK based stakeholders to facilitate their work, including by transmitting documents, organising and providing logistical support for a range of events such as incoming visits by UK officials, receptions, meetings, consultations, seminars, and conferences;
  • Occasionally represent the UK at external meetings and provide written reporting;
  • Draft and prepare credentials, notes verbale, correspondence, minutes and other documents;
  • Manage Outlook diaries, schedule appointments, book official travel; and
  • Provide ad hoc relief cover to the Executive Assistant to the Ambassador.

The  job description is subject to changes and may evolve over time and in response to changing circumstances. The role exists as part of a team and all staff are expected to be flexible in supporting colleagues, particularly at busy times.

  • Fluency in English (both written and spoken, minimum of C1 level for CEFR framework*);
  • Flexibility, strong self-management, and time management skills;
  • Excellent IT skills, particularly in the use of Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel;
  • Strong inter-personal skills;
  • Ability to multi-task, plan ahead, and prioritise;
  • Ability to demonstrate integrity, reliability, and confidentiality.
  • A demonstrated interest or experience in international relations, multilateral diplomacy, non-proliferation, and/or international law.

The successful candidate will initially be offered a one year employment contract at A2 level. The base salary for this position is € 2,751.93 gross per month, the abated salary is €2,563.38* based on a working week of 32 hours. In addition, an 8% annual holiday bonus and a monthly travel allowance are payable. The Embassy currently applies a performance based bonus pay model for local staff.

*Under the terms of the UK/NL Double Taxation Convention (Article 18 1(b)(ii),  UK nationals who move to The Netherlands to take up their new role at the Embassy/Consulate and UKB spouse start working at the Embassy with no previous record of working in the Netherlands since the arrival of the UKB partner they accompany,  will be placed on a tax abated salary if deemed to be eligible for Dutch income tax exemption on their salary. Qualifying staff will have no Dutch tax levied on their salary and will therefore be paid a lower salary abated by the amount of tax they would have had to pay if that local liability existed. A tax abated salary ensures a fair and comparable take home pay. Staff on tax abated salaries cannot claim tax benefits in The Netherlands but they are fully and comprehensively covered for social security and deemed to be resident local staff for all intents and  purposes.
