The British Government in Germany is based at the British Embassy in Berlin and our consulates in Dusseldorf and Munich. We are part of a worldwide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. Currently, we're looking for an Internship Project Management Assistant to join our Department for International Trade Team (DIT) based in Dusseldorf.

Main purpose of job:

You will have an opportunity to learn about the work of the British diplomatic missions in Germany and to support the delivery of British public and commercial diplomacy, as well as networking directly with a wide range of UK and German stakeholders. The Consulate General in Düsseldorf is responsible for maintaining and developing bilateral relationships in the German federal states of NRW, Hessen, Rheinland-Pfalz and Saarland. The Department for International Trade team based in Dusseldorf is responsible for developing and promoting outward trade (UK exports) and inward investment by German businesses in the UK, with a focus on particular sectors, including Clean Growth (sustainable growth and renewable energy), Life Sciences, Chemicals and Food & Drink.

In 2021 NRW will mark the 75th anniversary of its foundation by the British in 1946. Following the UK’s exit from the EU, a significant programme of activity is being developed for 2021 to celebrate this important anniversary. It will also look forward to the further development of UK-NRW bilateral relationships under the title – “NRW-UK 75 years of #Freundship”. The programme will include elements relating to business, research partnerships and educational and cultural exchanges. One over-arching theme will be combatting climate change through the promotion of sustainable growth policies and the work of the COP26 conference, to be co-hosted by Italy and the UK in 2021 in Glasgow.

Roles and responsibilities:

During the internship, you will gain insight into and become actively involved in a variety of areas related to commercial and public diplomacy. There will be a particular focus on the UK-NRW 75 programme. The successful applicant will report to the Project Manager.

Tasks will include:

  • You will assist the Project Manager to plan, coordinate and deliver the Consulate-General´s key activities and events concerning the overall programme to mark 75 years of common history and friendship between the UK and NRW.
  • To manage English and German written correspondence and telephone enquiries and provide administrative support on behalf of the Consul-General, including arranging team meetings and video conferences.
  • To support the organisation of the annual Queen’s Birthday Reception by taking an active role with regard to VIP recruitment and setting up the venue.
  • To carry out other duties that may reasonably be required and which are in accordance with the grading and core competencies of this internship. This may include making a corporate contribution to the wider Germany network.

We are looking for a pro-active, self-organised, and result-oriented individual who is driven by an interest in international commercial & public diplomacy.

The successful applicant will be a strong team player, flexible and happy to engage in a wide range of tasks, often requiring the ability to deliver at pace with short deadlines.

You should have already gained some international experience, have strong interpersonal skills and excellent German and English communication skills ( (minimum level required C1 under the CEFRL or equivalent*).

Applicants must be enrolled in an European University for the whole duration of the internship.

During the internship period (6 months) you must be enrolled in an European University programme for the whole duration of the internship.

This is an internship of 6 months, full-time 37.5 hours per week. Monday to Friday 9.30 a.m. to  5 p.m.

The successful candidate will be subject to professional background check and security clearance.

The Düsseldorf Consulate has a strong ethos of Learning and Development. There are regular opportunities to attend internal and external seminars and events on issues of wider interest. This is in addition to the induction programme offered to all Consulate staff. Further training provided for IT and Security elements of the position.

Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Germany and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
