Main purpose of job:


The key objective for this role would be to develop the relationships needed within both business and local governments to identify market access barriers and lobby effectively and in co-ordination with like-minded partners to overcome them. The ideal candidate would have a background in economic policy, trade policy or other public policy and a keen understanding of the nexus between policy makers, regulation and business.


 


Roles and responsibilities:


  • Consult with UK companies to identify market access barriers, maintain a registry of these market access issues and develop engagement plans to resolve these specific commercial and policy asks.
  • Provide policy advice to UK business on tackling restrictions to entering the market place.
  • Engage with the Financial Services sector and their community of economists to further our understanding of and inform reporting on economic policy and business risk for UK interests.
  • Support the DIT Rail and Infrastructure Lead to facilitate deeper government-to-government relationships and UK thought leadership on the Infrastructure portfolio to position the UK as the partner.
  • Build and maintain cooperative relationships with local government officials in key ministries to advance UK priorities, and receive insights on relevant bilateral issues.
  • Leverage wider network of key business, academic, and think tank organisations to support delivery of business plan outcomes.
  • Follow energy policy issues and flag potential opportunities for greater UK engagement leading to the possibility of future commercial wins.


Essential on arrival:


  • Fluent English (both written and spoken);
  • Previous work experience in an international business or government relations environment;
  • Proven ability to form professional relationships and build trust with a wide range of contacts from different backgrounds including at senior levels;
  • Experience in or understanding of how to navigate the nexus between policy makers, regulation and business.
  • Excellent IT skills, including MS Outlook, Word and Excel.

Desirable:


  • Degree/Masters or equivalent business qualification in a relevant Business/Economics/Policy subject;
  • Existing network of government/business contacts;

The position requires pre-existing legal status to live and work in Canada and will be subject to satisfactory reference checks and successful receipt of local and overseas security clearances.
