View Vacancy - Head of Economic Affairs and Sustainable Development, British Embassy Santiago
Main purpose of job:
To lead the Embassy team (five people) responsible for the UK Government’s relationship with Chile in key economic policy areas, including: trade policy, climate change, infrastructure, green growth, financial services and science and innovation. Create the conditions for UK business success, including through projects, lobbying and visits by Ministers and experts, Report on economic policy areas. Deliver joint campaigns with Department for International Trade and British Chamber of Commerce.
To oversee delivery of all Embassy policy and programme activity in relation to Chile’s hosting of COP25, APEC and Presidency of the Pacific Alliance in 2019.
Roles and responsibilities:
Strategy and Leadership (40%) - To shape and deliver the UK’s ‘Prosperity Strategy’ for Chile, in conjunction with Director for International Trade. Lead strong performing team, working on a broad range of discrete policy portfolios. Provide support/ feedback and contribute to development of three direct reports, supporting their development as Line Managers. As a Senior Management Team member of the Embassy, actively contribute to the Embassy’s Corporate Agenda.
Economic Diplomacy (35%) – Oversight of team’s policy activity in relation to economic and trade issues (including economic reform and design of bilateral trade and other arrangements post-Brexit), climate change, green growth, financial services and science and innovation, with a particular focus on Chile’s hosting of COP25, APEC and Presidency of the Pacific Alliance in 2019. Lead on discrete areas including infrastructure and reducing market access barriers.
Commercial Diplomacy (10%) - Contribute towards British business success in Chile. Influence policy frameworks in key sectors and deliver joint campaigns with DIT and British-Chilean Chamber of Commerce.
Projects (15%) - Bid for funding for project activity and oversee delivery, ensuring projects fit with business plan objectives. Representational duties; leading effort to influence policy change and draw out commercial opportunities as a result of programme implementation.
Essential on arrival: Professional experience in economic, trade or sustainable development issues. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. An ability to work independently, with minimal supervision, and show initiative and enthusiasm. Strong management and organisational skills, the ability to work under pressure and react quickly to changing priorities with a can-do attitude and high attention to detail.
Desirable: The ideal candidate would also have a diverse network of contacts in government and academia plus knowledge of UK and Chilean strengths in relevant policy areas.
