View Vacancy - Legal Intern
The British Embassy in Panama is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a Legal Intern to join its Criminal Law and Prosperity Teams at an important moment for the UK/Panama bilateral relationship.
The successful candidate will work closely with the UK Criminal Justice Advisor to Panama, and will already have some legal knowledge / background of Panamanian criminal law and Panama’s adversarial system. Some policy knowledge / experience would also be useful. Candidates must be fully bilingual. The job would suit someone with excellent communication and organisational skills and some administrative experience.
Roles and responsibilities:
Embassy work is constantly shifting to adapt with changing priorities. The following outline of responsibilities serves as a guide for the role; however the successful candidate must be flexible to take on other areas of work as required.
Assist in the delivery of Legal and Prosperity projects, including:
- Travel and hotel bookings.
- Administrative tasks including, emails, filing and writing letters to government departments.
- Making calls to government departments to organise meetings.
- Translation (of short documents) and occasional interpretation in meetings.
- Liaison with Panama Government Departments.
- Budget management.
- Full Proficiency, oral and written in English and Spanish.
- Some knowledge of Panamanian law.
- Excellent writing/drafting skills in both languages.
- Administrative Experience.
- Excel and Word skills.
- Research skills (assessing various sources, Internet searches).
- Personal drive, sound judgement and attention to detail.
- Strong organisational and time management skills, including the ability to prioritise.
- Flexible, resilient under pressure and decisive with a proven track record of delivering results to a high standard within tight deadlines.
- Strong networking skills.
- Legal qualification or experience.
- An understanding of UK culture and a desire and interest in learning more about UK politics and its media landscape.
- Understanding of current affairs / political environment / foreign policy.
- Many opportunities for learning and development on the job through attendance of seminars, workshops and building relationships. Training will be provided on the job, through mentoring, and through courses delivered either on-line or by the Regional Learning and Development centre.
- Office hours in the embassy are 8am-5pm Monday to Thursday and 8am-1pm on Fridays, though there is scope for flexible working arrangements, which can be agreed with the Line Manager; personal circumstances will be taken into account. This role requires occasional attendance at evening and weekend events.
