Main purpose of job

The purpose of this job is to support the UK Government’s objectives in Australia by leading, developing and delivering trade and investment services in Queensland in a range of key sectors important to the UK and Queensland economies. You will identify areas of priority and provide strategic advice, support and guidance to both new and existing British and Queensland businesses.


Roles and responsibilities

This exciting role requires the identification of innovative UK and Queensland companies with globally scalable services and strategic support for UK companies doing business in Australia in a range of sectors including Financial, Services, Infrastructure and Technology sectors. It involves formulating and executing strategies aimed at generating a pipeline of UK companies with capability to do business here and generating leads for Foreign Direct Investment attraction to support existing activity across the Australia New Zealand network.

You will have expertise in strategy, marketing, planning and execution. You will find innovative ways to connect and develop relationships that enable UK companies to enter and do business in Queensland, managing a wide range of stakeholders in market and in the UK. This will include building capability, identifying and facilitating strategic introductions, market analysis and commissioning research where necessary. You will work across trade and investment teams in ANZ and the wider Asia Pacific Region.

The role requires liaison with DIT HQ in London and marketing teams on high value work in a range of sectors; building a strong network across the 9 English regions to identify leads, build a pipeline and grow trade between the UK and Queensland.

A self starter, you will also generate your own opportunities and areas of UK/ANZ collaboration. Working with Australian and UK experts you will lead on building strong business to business and business to government connections in order to build and deliver a strategy for increasing business in the State. The role will include an element of domestic travel and possibly some international travel to the UK.

You will have superior communication, business consulting and relationship management skills with the ability to build rapport quickly. You will understand how to develop and leverage industry networks and share knowledge and expertise with colleagues across ANZ and the UK. As a team player you will be part of a global organisation working with colleagues across Australia, New Zealand, Asia Pacific and the UK.

You will work collaboratively across the network to organise and support inward visits and delegations from Australia to the UK and other high level visits throughout the year. You will also provide strategic support and assistance to the Consul General and Director of Trade in Brisbane, the Head of Investment for ANZ and Trade Policy colleagues in Canberra.

This role involves the management of one direct line-report in Brisbane who contributes to the overall team target and provides support in delivering high value work across the sectors you are involved in. You will also be responsible for managing and reporting on budgets and expenditure, accurately tracking and forecasting.

Essential on arrival

  • Bachelors degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate field;
  • A minimum of five years’ work experience in business, ideally in an international & B2B context, or in business development;
  • Ability to develop and maintain networks with senior decision makers;
  • Strong inter-personal networking, presentation and communication skills;
  • Good knowledge of the Australian business environment;
  • Ability to deliver to ambitious targets and outcomes;
  • Strong research and analytical skills;
  • IT literate.
  • Some knowledge of the UK’s business environment, and some regional centres of the UK;
  • Some knowledge of the processes involved in overseas company expansions (foreign direct investment);
  • Some knowledge of investment and strategic export related decision processes.

Salary is at AU$$101,623 per annum (paid out monthly), plus 11% superannuation.

Appointment is subject to an AFP records check and UK security clearance.

Open to Australian citizens, permanent residents, and partners/ dependents of UK-based diplomatic staff currently posted in Australia.

Staff recruited locally by the British High Commission and its Consulates is subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Australian employment law. Interstate applicants will be required to meet their own travel and relocation expenses.

The British Government supports flexible working practices. Work outside of core hours may sometimes be required. 

Some travel may be required to the UK to develop sector knowledge and departmental training.
