Main purpose of job

Incumbent is responsible for day to day transport needs of the British High Commission, in particular the High Commissioner.  This includes providing timely, courteous service to all customers – internal and external.  In addition, the driver is responsible for carrying out courier functions and expected to assist with general administrative support and minor maintenance tasks.  The Driver is required to wear an official uniform to BHC standards.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • To act as the High Commissioner’s Official Driver and undertake all required functions in support of the High Commissioner.
  • Carry out relevant scheduled vehicle checks.
  • Ensure that vehicle has enough fuel at the end of the day.  A record of fuel purchased should be entered into the log book and passed to Receptionist for calculation and initials within 24 hours.
  • Ensure vehicle(s) serviced at scheduled times.
  • Ensure vehicle(s) road service licence, insurance and all other documentation are up to date.  Copies should be kept in the vehicle.
  • Keep assigned vehicle free from damage, in acceptable condition, and consistently clean.  Ensure that the vehicle is in proper and safe condition prior to use.  Where negligence is proven, cost of any repairs will be borne by you.
  • Accept responsibility to report any damage or mechanical malfunctions that exist.  Operate vehicle and equipment safely and responsibly at all times.
  • Accurately complete and submit any/all necessary paperwork, as required.
  • Ensure security of assigned vehicle(s).
  • Ensure all passengers use seat belts.
  • Observance of all highway regulations.
  • Keep an accurate record of all journeys; including documented runs for other departments, so that they can be identified and charged back as part of Activity Recording.
  • Picking up and dropping of Officers, Staff and Official Visitors to and from the airport and meetings, as directed.  Officers and Official Visitors must sign for their trip(s) at the end of the journey(s)
  • Delivery and pickup of items, documentation, ensuring accurate capture of what the item/documentation is, who requested the transport of the item, who received the item, and obtaining proper signatures.
  • Work extra/overtime hours as needed according to workload.  All overtime work should be properly documented and must be initialled by Transport Co-ordinator or Official passenger.
  • Any other tasks, in keeping with ability, may be assigned from time to time.

The BHC will provide:

  • Communication Equipment to ensure there are no barriers to communication between Driver and other BHC personnel as and when required.  Equipment is provided strictly to facilitate the execution of assigned duties and not for personal use.  
  • Three suits, one pair shoes, annually, to maximum value of G$50,000. 
  • An annual medical check-up is a requirement for all drivers.  This is paid for by the High Commission to maximum cost of G$50,000. 

Essential on arrival:

  • Valid Driver’s Licence and good driving record (minimum 7 years driving experience)
  • Demonstrate dependability and self-motivation
  • Be able to read, write, understand and communicate clearly in English
  • Be able to work as member of a team.
  • Be able to work to adjusted schedules and overtime when required.
  • Maintain high level personal integrity, discretion and reliability
  • Maintain good physical condition that will enable driver to stoop, bend, twist, and perform other motions, requiring strength and endurance when performing manual labour indoors or outdoors.  Be able to carry objects and frequently lift items up to 75 lbs.
  • Good self management, organisational and customer service skills. 
  • Proficiency in use of MS Word and MS Excel

Desirable:

  • Some IT skills would be an asset.
