The British Embassies to the Holy See and Italy are part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and are now looking to recruit a COP26 Policy and Events Officer.

The successful candidate will support the embassies in delivering policy and events for the 26th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26), with a particular focus on a faith leaders element and contributing to the overall delivery of the UK/Italy partnership, including the delivery of planned events and programmes.

Main duties and responsibilites:

  • To contribute to the design of the faith leaders’ element of COP26, becoming an expert in UK and Holy See climate change policy, advising on religious sensitivities and Holy See/faith leaders priorities; including briefing for ministers and senior officials;
  • To lead on logistics and contribute to policy and operational elements of delivering the faith leaders component of COP26, in coordination with the British Embassy Holy See, British Embassy Rome and London;
  • To communicate with key posts within the network on their work with faith leaders in their respective countries;
  • To deliver ministerial and official visits from the UK related to the faith element of COP26 and delivery of pre-COP event(s) with the British Embassy Holy See and the British Embassy in Rome;
  • To support the Italy Network in delivery of the UK/Italy partnership and a programme of events for COP26, particularly in outreach to Italian stakeholders and delivery of programmes and events;
  • Actively participate in a wider corporate capacity within the Embassy, contributing to the wider corporate agenda of the Italy network.

  • Proficiency level (both oral and written) of English and Italian, according to the Common European Framework level C1 or above or equivalent;
  • At least 2 years of experience delivering high level events and/or conferences; 
  • A proven track record in working well with others and liaising with multiple stakeholders within international organisations;
  • Previous experience in delivering ministerial and official visits;
  • Ability to think strategically and translate organisational goals into daily work;  
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to develop and foster relationships with stakeholders, partners and colleagues;
  • Strong influencing and negotiation skills;
  • Previous experience and/or high interest in Climate Change policies;
  • Ability to deliver at pace and meet the deadlines;
  • Flexibility to travel on short notice, as requested.



  • University degree or experience of working in climate science, international relations, or other relevant discipline;
  • Experience of working with the Holy See or other Church institutions would be an advantage.

This is a full time temporary position with a contract of 12 months with the possibility of extension, graded B3 according to the FCO grading structure. The monthly gross salary is Euro 2,929.00. The salary is paid monthly 14 times per year including € 10.33 EDR paid 13 times per year, with double salary payments in June and December. If working less than a full calendar year, the additional salary payments will be pro-rata.

Working hours are 35 hours per week Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 17:00.

The appointment is subject to security clearance, professional background check, and the successful completion of a 4 month probationary period.

All staff employed by the British Embassy are subject to Italian income tax rate deductions (IRPEF). However the administration of these tax payments will vary depending on nationality.

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Italian State Social Security Scheme. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Rome and the British Embassy Holy See are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Italian employment law.

Visa/Passport requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Italy and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract. Additional requirements may become necessary after 31st December 2020.
