The British Embassy in Rome is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a temporary Pro Consul to manage and inspire the Consular team to deliver first class customer service, consular assistance and support to resident and visiting British Nationals.

To provide high quality Consular services to British Nationals in Italy in line with the standards set out in our publication “Support for British Nationals Abroad” and “Consular Strategy”. The role requires a dynamic, well organised person with a passion for customer service, strong communication and problem solving skills as well as an ability to work under pressure.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide a high level of consular assistance and support to British Nationals in a wide range of situations including hospitalisations, death, arrest, rape and sexual assault, missing persons, child custody and financial difficulties;
  • Liaison with local authorities and contacts such as funeral directors, police, courts, lawyers, prisons, hospitals, town halls and social workers as well as key stakeholders, charities and support organisations in order to provide assistance to British Nationals;
  • Administrative services including accurate recording of consular cases, printing and issuing of Emergency Travel Documents, Notarial services including marriage documentation and general assistance enquiries;
  • Spot trends to influence our prevention activity and campaigns with local partners in order to reduce issues and risk assess high volume events like International football matches;
  • To deploy in crisis situations and participate in wider activities across the Europe South and Italy network to support government objectives.
  • Fluent written and spoken English and Italian (Common European Framework level/equivalent C1 or above);
  • Knowledge of Italian government processes in relation to visiting and resident British Nationals;
  • Good team player;
  • Experience of working in a customer service environment;
  • Excellent listening skills, empathetic and have a high level of resilience
  • Strong communication skills with internal and external stakeholders;
  • Flexible approach, strong initiative and adaptability to evolving work priorities;
  • Excellent IT skills, including proficiency with MS Office applications.
  • Previous Consular experience;
  • Knowledge of Italian government structures and processes;
  • Experience responding to crisis situations or crisis training.

This is a full-time temporary position with a contract of 12 months with a possibility to extend, graded A2(L) according to the FCO grading structure. The monthly gross salary is Euro 2,312. The salary is paid monthly 14 times per year including € 10.33 EDR paid 13 times per year, with double salary payments in June and December. If working less than a full calendar year, the additional salary payments will be pro-rata.

Working hours are 35 hrs per week Monday to Friday.

The appointment is subject to security clearance, professional background check and the successful completion of a 4 month probationary period.

All staff employed by the British Embassy are subject to Italian income tax rate deductions (IRPEF). However the administration of these tax payments will vary depending on nationality.

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Italian State Social Security Scheme. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Rome are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Italian employment law.

Visa/passport requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Italy and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract. Additional requirements may become necessary after 31st December 2020.
