Main purpose of job:

This position is a leading and challenging role in one of the UK’s largest and most high profile Embassies.  You will be a senior member of a team responsible for reporting, analysis and advice on Afghan domestic politics.  Your main focus will be on the portfolios of political opposition activity, elections (including electoral laws), Parliament, northern and Hazara politics and some areas of provincial politics. You will need to produce high quality reporting and analysis proactively, drawing on your extensive network of contacts.  You will also need to use your excellent interpreting skills at meetings between Afghan contacts and British diplomats.  The successful applicant will be expected to be self-motivated, be able to work effectively with Afghan and UK colleagues, and have well-developed contact building and political analysis experience.  He or she will also need strong communication and organisational skills and management experience as she or he will manage another member of staff within the team. This role will report to a UK member of staff and will work closely with all members of the Political Section. 

Main Responsibilities:

  • Proactively identifying and reporting political developments.
  • Building, maintaining and sharing a broad network of political contacts, including in government, parliament, provincial administrations and civil society, and providing timely political advice and insightful analysis to the Embassy team.
  • Dari/Pashto interpretation at meetings and events for senior UK diplomats and members of the Political Section, plus translation of letters and official documents as required.
  • Line management of colleague

Key Skills/Qualifications Required 

  • Three to four years’ experience of working in an international organisation.

  • Fluent spoken and written English.

  • Fluent spoken and written Dari.

  • An ability to work on own initiative and under pressure.

  • Political analysis skills.

  • Excellent interpretation and translation skills.

  • Bachelor’s University degree.

  • Experience of using Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.

  • Excellent references .

The following would be an advantage:

  • Knowledge of Afghan political institutions.
  • Knowledge of Hazara and northern politics.
  • Broad range of contacts across the Afghan political environment.

Language requirements:

Language: English, Dari

Level of language required: Fluent

For external candidates, salary will be $3,442.69 (Gross) per month with $100 transport and $125 medical allowances. 

 

We also offer a competitive package including a yearly performance-related bonus scheme, an annual leave entitlement of 25 days per year, a multicultural environment and learning and development opportunities.

This will be a fixed term contract. The conditioned net working hours are Sunday-Thursday 0830-1630 hrs. The jobholder will need to be willing to work flexible hours within the same overall weekly hours of other Embassy staff, with some events at evenings. Occasional regional travel will be required - security permitting. The content of this role may vary slightly depending on team requirements.
