MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB

You will be part of the Trade Policy team working with the Department of International Trade with an objective of tackling market access issues for UK business.

 

The team engages on the broad spectrum of Indian and UK/Indian trade policy issues providing analysis, reporting, policy advice and programme input to support UK companies winning business in India. You will be instrumental in advancing the UK’s market access agenda and working towards improvements to the business environment in India. Alongside the bilateral trade activity, you will work with UK Trade & Economics and Prosperity (UKTEP) colleagues across the British High Commission to develop expertise on the details of market access barriers and provide suggestions on overcoming them through bilateral and multilateral for a, including forging alliances and building pressure for change.

 

You will then work with DIT’s Headquarters’ team in the UK and in other markets to play a key role in supporting specific companies to resolve any access or commercial issues and assist bringing UK companies to India and support them to win business, delivering towards the UK government’s twin export targets

 

You will need to develop a strong network of external contacts to deliver rapid access to accurate information as well as to influence policy positions.  You will bring with you, or demonstrate how you would quickly acquire, an in-depth knowledge of market access issues and barriers to trade.  You will also need excellent organisational skills to manage a high number of senior visits in your area of work. You will be a self-starter who can demonstrate a long-term objective; plan and manage a delivery model; identify, grow and make effective use of stakeholders.   You will work with colleagues within DIT in India and elsewhere, with other UK government colleagues, Indian government(s), business and other multipliers (trade associations, etc.).

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Provide accurate and well informed analysis, advice and briefing on all the key market access issues to take forward UK interests in India. Understand and analyse the underlying political drivers of, and offer advice on, trade policy changes.  Issue regular proactive updates on changes to Indian policy and the impact on market sectors and businesses. Develop and refine a strategy to advance UK interests on market access issues.
  • Build and manage senior level relationships with key decision making and advisory institutions in India including Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Finance, stakeholders and partners. Use Govt and business groups to progress bilateral trade and investment interests in a sustainable manner. Work across one-HMG team to support objectives and deliver value for UK business.
  • Work with UK companies and the Government of India to establish mechanisms by which company-specific disputes can be discussed and resolved at pace; and supporting UK companies to resolve commercial issues affecting their profitability and/or investments in India.
  • Identify and design projects to drive forward work to improve the business environment in India aligned with the wider BHC programme strategy. Oversee delivery of projects through implementing agencies including accurate financial compliance and reporting. Identify risks and problems with projects and take initiative to develop solutions.
  • Contributing to wider corporate UK government objectives, including input to Ministerial/VIP visits and deliverables in Post and across one-HMG in India.

This job is a senior position, reflecting a decision by DIT to create greater capacity within the team, enabling greater strategic direction and focus on tackling market barriers for the UK. The DIT team is a high-performing, hybrid team of supportive colleagues made up of UK-based and locally engaged staff totalling around 100 people, spread across nine cities in India.

  • You will have experience of developing productive relationships with senior decision makers in UK and Indian businesses and with stakeholders and partners, and of using these to deliver your objectives.
  • You will need to be collaborative and flexible and able to manage yourself and the demands on you.
  • You will have good project management skills to create and deliver campaigns; and excellent English written and verbal communication skills. You will be expected to produce written work in Standard English to a high standard.

Qualifications:

Graduate/post graduate. Candidates without the required educational qualifications but with exceptional practical experience will be considered.

 

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant commercial/business experience
  • An in-depth understanding of market access issues and a strong network in the sector are essential.
  • Strong analytical and problem skills.
  • Tried and tested project management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, team working and people management skills. Experience of dealing with senior level decision makers Indian national and state government. You will need to show a solid track record of dealing with senior level decision makers in the business world.
  • Experience of working in the UK; knowledge of the business environment and of UK business related policies..
  • Marketing and presentational skills.
  • Experience of working in trade/export promotion.
  • Experience of working in the trade policy space in India/UK will be an added advantage
