This is a unique opportunity to hold a crucial position at the heart of the fast-paced UK-China energy relationship in the build up to next year’s COP26 climate summit in Glasgow, and at a time when China is undertaking a series of fundamental and complex reforms across its energy system. The successful candidate will provide administrative and policy support to the Embassy’s Energy Policy Team, liaise with key PRC and UK stakeholders including government departments, researchers, and businesses, and help with the coordination for the cross-China UK Energy Network.


This position requires a highly motivated and self-starting individual with an interest in the energy sector, strong organisational and influencing skills and the ability to communicate persuasively in written and oral English and Chinese.

The job holder will be responsible for:

  • Supporting delivery of high impact visits for UK and Chinese ministers and officials, physically or online depending on circumstances. Such visits will include the annual Ministerial UK-China Energy Dialogue, where the job holder would support by: arranging visit programmes for official visitors; booking hotels, travel and interpreters; organising logistics for online meeting platforms; liaising between visitors and Chinese contacts; working with policy leads to agree programmes for Chinese officials and ministers visiting the UK.   
  • With guidance from the Policy Lead, the job holder will analyse and communicate  important policy, political and market developments in China to contacts in the UK and China, including drafting and issuing two-weekly policy announcement updates and a quarterly newsletter for the team, as well as ad hoc reporting on key policy and industry developments. Supporting policy leads by identifying key policy updates and trends from Chinese sources on issues ranging across coal transition, renewable energy, energy efficiency and other areas.• Acting as the main person of contact for communications with China’s National Energy Administration (NEA), maintaining relationships, setting up meetings, sharing updates on UK-China collaboration and keeping up to date information on the ministry.
  • Providing administrative support for team members, including by: arranging travel and meetings; issuing invitations and coordinating attendance of external contacts for official Embassy events, building relationships and liaising with contacts in government, academia and industry. 
  • Supporting the cross-China UK Energy Network, including by: managing joint mailing lists and organising shared filing systems, managing contact lists and stakeholder mapping, supporting team leader in managing and forecasting budgets, and supporting delivery of network-wide events such as team away days, joint learning and development sessions. 

Support team leader in managing local budget for the energy team, including forecasting, monitoring and reporting end of year spend. Support policy leads across the team on desk research and policy analysis.

This is an exciting opportunity to work in a key area of the UK-China bilateral relationship. The tasks identified in the roles and responsibilities above are the main areas of work, but there will also be opportunities for the job holder to develop an understanding of energy policy as well as of the main stakeholders in China and the UK. 

We offer a competitive package, which includes basic salary, good leave entitlement, and insurance plan, etc. The gross salary (before all deductions) is CNY 10,997/month for Chinese Nationals and an abated monthly salary of CNY 15,404/month for British Nationals and spouses/ partners (all nationalities) of diplomats who are ‘W’ (diplomatic) visa holders and meet passport criteria.

We also offer excellent development opportunities and a 22-day annual leave entitlement in pro rata.

Conditioned working hours is 35 hours/ week from Monday to Friday and flexible working can be arranged upon personal needs.
