Main purpose of job

Scottish Development International is looking for a Senior Trade Specialist to lead on Scotland’s Science & Technology sectors in Australia. This will include supporting Scottish Science & Technology companies to access new markets and take new products to international markets, by identifying trade opportunities with key customers.

Based at the British Consulate General and working closely with other departments, you will lead on trade support and trade development activities for SDI in Australia. You will develop and maintain strategic relationships that grow Scottish trade, identify export opportunities and provide market insights within the science and technology sectors in Australia; the technology (fintech, health-tech) being the primary sectors of focus. We’re looking for a confident, target-driven communicator who can build and maintain strong rapports with customers and manage projects.
You should be at ease when presenting, project managing, and dealing with senior personnel. You will also have experience in international trade, providing business development services and working with SMEs. Knowledge and understanding of technology related sectors or an ability to rapidly acquire knowledge is key.

Roles and responsibilities

Trade Development

  • Identify key customers operating in the Science & Technology sectors and take a strategic account management role, understand their procurement and supply chain requirements and discuss potential opportunities for Scottish companies;
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with other relevant stakeholders and trade associations to identify platforms for collaborative or strategic engagement between Scotland and Australia;
  • Identify and attend sector-specific trade shows, exhibitions and conferences in the market/region to promote Scotland’s proposition; expand your network of contacts; and identify opportunities for Scottish companies;
  • Gather market intelligence and scope/explore new opportunities for Scottish companies. Report on trends to SDI sector teams, companies and partners as appropriate;
  • Deliver webinars and use social media, including LinkedIn, to highlight key market opportunities to raise awareness of key market opportunities for Scottish companies;
  • Take a creative approach to trade development work and look for innovative ways to create demand for Scottish goods and services. 

Trade support

  • Work as part of a wider account team to provide trade advice and guidance to Scottish companies looking to access market opportunities in Australia within the sector as outlined in the international sector operating plan;
  • Support Scottish companies with market entry and growth strategies and develop a deep understanding of routes to market, business environment and regulatory framework in your subsector & market;
  • Work with colleagues in Scotland to deliver visit programmes, trade missions and learning journeys for Scottish companies, providing added value for participating companies by introducing them to your network of contacts and setting up 1-2-1 meetings for them while in market;
  • Update Dynamics with details of all company support provided and how it has helped to deliver against SDI’s objectives;
  • Develop close working relationships with other partners including DIT, Chambers of Commerce/Trade Associations, Global Scots, and other in-market industry trade bodies who can add value to SDI’s work with Scottish companies in-market;
  • Support and leverage visits into the region by Scottish Ministers and senior colleagues with existing investors, prospects, customers and stakeholders;
  • Deliver against Scottish Government export objectives and raise the profile of Scotland as a Life Science and Technology destination and R&D hub.

Essential on arrival:

  • 5- years experience in the technology sector;
  • An experienced networker with established relationships in Australia within Life Science & Technology sectors;
  • Understanding of the organisational structures of the Australian Life Science and Technology sectors;
  • Analytical skills acquired in an international market context with a consultative sales approach to achieving results;
  • Fast learning, self-starter who can demonstrate initiative, resilience, and project management skills;
  • Strong communicator, confident in using Office 365 platform as well as CRM platforms;
  • A team player with a collaborative approach who can work successfully within a geography and ‘virtual team’ to achieve common objectives.
  • An understanding of government and the role it plays in international trade;
  • Experience of working in an international trade promotion environment;
  • Experience/knowledge of the technology or life sciences industry.

Appointment is subject to an AFP records check and UK security clearance.

Open to Australian citizens, permanent residents, and partners/ dependents of UK-based diplomatic staff currently posted in Australia.

Staff recruited locally by the British High Commission and its Consulates is subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Australian employment law. Interstate applicants will be required to meet their own travel and relocation expenses.

The British Government supports flexible working practices. Work outside of core hours may sometimes be required.
