Main purpose of job:
The Corporate Services Team in Washington is looking for a Plumber/HVAC Technician to support the Maintenance team in the Embassy compound and Residential Estate. This is an exciting and varied role which would suit an enthusiastic candidate who is adaptable, eager to learn and can work well as part of a customer focused team.
The British Embassy in Washington DC has a large commercial and residential estate in the Washington DC Metropolitan area. It comprises of Her Majesty’s Ambassador to the United States Residence, large office building and approximately 98 owned or leased residential apartments and houses.
Roles and responsibilities:
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Daily maintenance of all Plumbing fixtures and systems throughout the Estate.
- Take instruction from Lead Plumber and Plant room Engineer (contractor) on basic plant maintenance.
- Plumbing duties to include daily checks and maintenance of all plumbing fixtures, inspection of water lines, sewer lines, gas lines, and purchase and installation of white goods.
- Basic HVAC skills to include, visual inspection and minor repairs to exhaust fans, AHU, Fan coils, chillers, boilers, cooling towers. Grease motors and bearings, Change filters and belts, and visually inspect equipment for water, gas, oil leaks. Drain and clean cooling towers. Check seals and couplings for wear.
- Basic monitoring of the BMS (Building Management System).
- Liaise with local contractors on larger servicing requirements.
- Work with Lead Plumber on implementation of a preventative maintenance schedule for all related equipment.
- Deputise for the Lead Plumber as and when required.
- Ensure all work orders are completed on time and work closely with key stakeholders to deliver full customer satisfaction.
- Become an integral member of the Estates Team to perform basic plumbing duties and other duties as and when required.
- Ensure Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office and local Health & Safety standards are applied.
- Previous professional experience in Plumbing.
- Journeyman license or equivalent certification recommended.
- Full driver’s license, with no infractions in the last 5 years.
- Proficient in English language
- Experience in maintenance of boilers, chillers, motors, BMS, pneumatic controls, and water cooling towers would be advantageous.
- Knowledge of local building codes and previous training Health and Safety standards (OSHA).
- Adaptability, flexibility, energy, and a willingness to learn and focus on team working.
Under US State Department requirements, the UK Government in the US has restrictions on the type of visas our non-diplomatic staff may hold. Standard 40 hour week. Monday to Friday 0730 – 1600. Occasional overtime. Requirement to be part of the on-call team.
After the initial interview candidates will be invited to return to the Embassy for an in-person practical test on basic plumbing/HVAC requirements.
Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list’. If during the reserve period of 6-12 months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.
Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount. Internal candidates must inform their supervisor before they apply to a different position.
