Main purpose of job:

Working in the Defence and Security Export (DSE) Team in DIT Japan, who cover Defence the, Security, Cyber security and Aerospace sectors, you will provide advice, research, and support to promote UK companies in the field of defence, cyber security and space. This role will require project management of campaigns, stakeholder management in both the public and private sectors, research and awareness of industry trends, direct advice to UK companies and other parts of UK Government.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

30% 
To lead on the space sector: with Section Head/Senior Trade Adviser’s supervision, you will lead on the Space sector, developing trade promotion for the sector. You will develop and deliver a business plan to identify opportunities, provide advice and support to UK stakeholders to increase UK space exports to Japan.  Through  research and training you will develop sector knowledge and market intelligence both in Japan and UK, including key subsectors, associated trade bodies, and companies to work with and engage directly to promote the UK offer. You will build an effective relationship with UK and Japanese stakeholders across government and industry,  and understand relevant government policies to enhance UK-Japan business partnerships  and promote  UK exports.  You will provide UK companies with specialist advice on the local market and will be responsible for identifying a pipeline of opportunities within the sector.  You will work closely with other sector teams, in particular Science and Innovation, Media & Communications, the Devolved Administrations and Defence to promote the UK’s overall space capabilities.

To support trade promotion in the teams sectors. - Working with the Sector Head and Senior Trade Advisor, you will provide support for a wide range of trade promotion activities including: key events (Defence and Security Equipment International (Japan and UK); Farnborough International Air show; Japan Aerospace); trade missions; business matching events; seminars and income generation events. You will develop an understanding of the defence and cyber security sectors, in order to support senior team members with advice for UK companies, the development of a pipeline of opportunities and managing key contacts in both industry and government such as Japanese MOD, Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency (ATLA), Japan Self Defence Force (JSDF) and Ministry of Economy, Trade & Industry (METI).  There may be opportunities to travel to the UK.

Providing administrative support to the wider DSE team for day-to-day team administration including procurement and recording activities on to DataHub, events and exhibitions and translation and interpretation.

10% 
Contribute to the wider work of the Embassy such as corporate committees; Embassy wide events such as the Queen’s Birthday Party; inward senior visits as required and taking an active role in the Crisis Response Plan and participating in crisis exercises.

  • Previous experience in working in Industry or Japanese Government
  • Proficient  IT skills (especially Word, PowerPoint and Excel)

Language requirements: 

Language:  Japanese/English

Level of language required:  Fluency in Japanese due to translation requirements and good business English (IELTS band 7 or TOEIC 875 points or above or equivalent)

  • Degree in the following subjects: business, space, cyber, international relations and politics

Learning and development opportunities (and any specific training courses to be completed):
     
Three key areas of focus will be:


(i) building up a knowledge of the key sectors which the postholder will  work in.  On the job training, presentations from sector specialists and Developing Sector Knowledge course and mentoring support.
(ii) building up influencing and sales skills through on the job training and DIT run courses like Effective Account Management or Consultancy Based Sales training courses would be useful.
(iii) developing knowledge of the UK Government system through on-the-job training, online courses and interaction with other parts of the Embassy and HMG Departments. 

The British Embassy offers comprehensive learning and development opportunities that will be fully available to the jobholder. We regularly run both work area specific training, as well as more general skills development in project management, finance, and leadership. Each year the job holder will be encouraged to use 5 development days to pursue job related and personal development goals.

All staff are required to take a role in the embassy’s crisis preparation and response. Full training will be provided for this and regular opportunities will be available to test and develop your skills.
