Main purpose of job:

The Economic and Prosperity Team in Panama City is looking for a full-time intern to join the team, eager to learn and passionate about influencing policy development and promoting economic growth.  We want a person with good communication, organisation and analytical skills that can work independently and can take initiative to understand and solve problems. 

The job holder will support of the work of the Economic and Prosperity Team, ranging from researching background on various relevant issues to the team, to supporting at events and with administrative issues. The job holder will build up knowledge in specific policy areas, acquiring and using a network of contacts to spot key opportunities for the UK to work closely with Panama’s public and private sector. The candidate will also support the work of the embassy in analysing and researching the economic situation in Panama and the Central American region, helping to contribute towards economic reporting and providing insight and analysis for wider policy considerations. The jobholder will report to the Deputy Head of the Economic and Prosperity Team

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Provide support across the Team as needed to help deliver the Team’s objectives.
  • Use analytical skills to conduct research across the broader Prosperity Strategy and find areas of possible engagement.
  • Use organisation skills to assist in the delivery of projects and administrative tasks.
  • Communicate effectively to influence external stakeholders. Collaborate with new ideas, directions, and tools for communications that facilitate the completion of the team's objectives.
  • Support delivery of virtual and in person events to deliver professional and effective outcomes. 
  • Develop and distribute weekly reports with the most relevant news on the economic situation in Panama and the Central American region.

Essential on arrival: 

  • Recently completed or towards completion of a first-level university degree, preferably in related fields (e.g. International Relations, Economics).
  • Fluent in English and Spanish.
  • IT proficient.
  • Research, analytical, and writing skills.
  • Enthusiastic and willing to learn.
  • Ability of work independently with little supervision and pro-actively to complete assignments.     

Language requirements: 

Language: English and Spanish

Level of language required: Fluent in both, oral and written. 

Desirable:  

  • The candidate should have an interest in politics, good governance reform and an understanding of global issues.  
  • Qualification in Economics.

The successful candidate must be Panamanian, or have a valid and current Work Permit through Ministry of Labour, and be able to provide it when requested by Embassy.  The British Embassy – Panama City does not sponsor work permits.  Office hours in the Embassy are 8am-5pm Monday to Thursday and 8am-1pm on Fridays, though there is scope for flexible working arrangements, which can be agreed with the Line Manager.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.

Learning and development opportunities:

The Embassy is committed to learning and development and there is a range of training on offer for the successful application to support their work in the embassy.  This will include training courses delivered remotely through the FCDO’s International Academy, as well as the potential to travel for training courses delivered regionally.
