The UK Mission to the United Nations in Geneva is part of a world-wide network, representing UK interests overseas. We are looking for a part-time (currently 80%, possibly increasing in future up to full time) Human Resources Officer.

The main purpose of the job is to lead on all HR matters for the UK Mission in Geneva and support the Corporate Services Manager and wider Team. The Corporate Services Team manages the logistics of staff arrivals and departures. The Human Resources Officer is a critical, dynamic and much valued role in the Mission. 

There are many opportunities to demonstrate leadership and drive, improving the experience of all staff in the Mission and providing critical support to the Corporate Services Manager and Deputy Head of Mission.

What is this role all about?

This is an HR generalist role managing several aspects of the employee lifecycle and HR projects.

What will you do:

Recruitment 20%

  • Ensure a fair, smooth, timely, accurate and streamlined process for recruitment of staff, in collaboration with HR Hub in Lisbon;

  • Increasing knowledge and awareness of all HR processes, especially recruitment, to improve smooth, efficient management and experience of new starters;

  • HR support to all teams and Line Managers on hiring and on-boarding;

  • Providing clear guidance in advance to ensure consistency and timely actions by all teams;

  • Participating in interview panels as required.

Staff Arrivals and Departures: 20%

  • Ensure that all staff arrivals and departures are handled well, through prompt communication with other teams to resolve and pre-empt issues;

  • Inducting all new staff, through personal induction and tailored induction pack;

  • Reviewing and updating induction process and information;

  • Developing Line Manager/Hiring Manager ‘essential guidance’ and checklist of actions;

  • Holding exit interviews for departing staff and ensuring results feedback to Mission leadership and People Survey Team.

HR Contracts/Legal & HR Policies: 20%

  • Issuing new contracts and contract renewals in accordance with Swiss Labour Law;

  • Observing necessary requirements during probation periods and confirming end of probations;

  • Reviewing Terms and Conditions of Service as and when required;

  • Presenting HR polices to the Senior Management, advising on and drafting changes to HR policies as required;

  • Advising and assisting staff as required on local HR queries;

  • Maintaining HR Files and preparing other HR documents.

 Internal Communications: 10%

  • Updating Corporate Services Team of arrivals, departures and on-going recruitment campaigns;

  • Putting together the monthly Corporate Services Team’s newsletter;

  • Providing timely and concise updates to the Mission on key HR policy updates of cross-cutting interest to staff and to the Corporate Board.

 Wider HR UKMis role: 10%

  • Holding reliable expertise on HR matters and FCDO policies, setting the tone on HR issues, and contributing to corporate work across the mission;

  • Supporting the ‘People Survey Team’, in particular for any HR-related matters;

  • Point of contact for Interns.

Our ideal candidate shows:    

  • C1 level or equivalent of the Common European Framework (CEFR) ** in English and French;

  • At least 2 years of work experience in a similar role;

  • Knowledge or experience of Swiss Labour Law;

  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office;

  • Strong organisational skills with very good attention to detail;

  • Strong customer service orientation, with a commitment to continuous service improvement;

  • Ability to get things done with minimal supervision. Dynamic and well organised;

  • Good judgement in ensuring policies balance the interests of both the business and staff;

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with strong ability to build co-operative working relationships across a large network, including external contacts;

  • Excellent team working skills;

  • Ability to work under pressure. Resilient and with ability to prioritise work;

  • Strong people skills and an ability to influence and engage at all levels. 

It will be a plus:

  • HR Degree (or other relevant field);

  • Previous HR work experience delivered in an international environment.

This is a part-time, permanent position of 32 working hours per week.

The successful candidate will be subject to professional background check and security clearance.

Staff recruited locally by the UK Mission in Geneva are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Swiss employment law. Final starting date will be agreed with the successful candidate.

Please note that local nationals will be paid their salary gross and are expected to comply with their tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the local authorities.  Non-local nationals will receive their salary net, minus the deduction of an equivalent level of local tax retained at source. Further information on this will be given to candidates during the recruitment process.
