Main purpose of job:

  • Lead on the design and delivery of Governor’s Office (GO) communications strategy and delivery of communications for the Governor and the office.
  • Support Crisis planning. 
  • Develop and Manage key events, with other key staff members.
  • To be the policy lead for Health and Welfare, supporting other policy matters as required.
  • To take on a corporate responsibility as part of the wider office team development.

Roles and responsibilities:

Communications lead – proactively drive the communications of the GO, building a communication strategy and delivery mechanism that enables the whole office to feed in and be part of delivery. Ensure the GO is well represented in the community, with clear and appropraite messaging.  Drive transparency around the GO, ensuring the public has  clarity around responsibilities of the Office and the poeple within it. Draft  press releases, speeches, speaker notes and information notes.

Events – working effectively with the team and as part of the communication strategy, proactively identify, plan and deliver key events that build relationships with the GO and deliver GO objectives . Identify, develop and manage communications around these events, supported by the wider team. Ensure value for money and local engagement.

Crisis planning – as part of the GO team, ensure there are clear communications aligned with Montserrat’s Disaster Management Co-ordination Agency, supporting the policy lead. Support policy lead on GO business continuity, includng on radio and equipment checks, and associated GO trainingPolicy Officer for Health and Welfare, the key liason officer between UKHSA and Montserrat Health Service, supporting local policy, seeking resources and advice when needed.

Policy – work with colleages in country and in the FCDO, draft policy documents, build relationships with key stakeholders, develop annual plans for delivery, build projects within a wider programme of delivery, managing the associated budget and reporting.

Take on corporate roles and responsibilities as required.

Be part of the team and represent the Governors office professionally at all times.

Essential on arrival: 

  • Communications experience.
  • Strong written and spoken skills.
  • Project management experience. 
  • Good organisational and time management.  
  • Proactivity.

Learning and development opportunities:

Statutory training as well as opportunities to develop key skills in policy development and communications.

Wider corporate skills will be developed and there will be occasional opportunities for international travel.

You will work closely with the Governor and the Head of the Governor’s Office, learning about the operations of the Office and FCDO, and the GO’s key constitutional areas. You will have exposure to a wide range of issues. 

The GO is high profile, you are likely to be approached frequently about various matters.  You will need to maintain the highest level of confidentiality and professionalism. The GO is public facing and there are frequent visitors. A full driving licence is required, a pool car is available between staff for external meetings.

We are a small team, you will have the opportunity to work on a diverse number of priorities. You will need to be a flexible team player, and will be expected to cover for colleagues.

There is a possibility of some international travel.

Appointment is subject to successfully obtaining FCDO security clearance.

The GO Montserrat is a small office and a small team.  We all work in the office to ensure cover and support for each other.  This job requires work outside of normal office hours (e.g. at evening and weekend events) for which TOIL is provided.
