Security Guards

Main purpose of job: 

The Post Security Supervisor (PSS) is responsible to the Post Security Manager (PSM), Regional Overseas Security Manager (ROSM) and Post Security Officer (PSO) for the supervision and management of the 12-strong contracted guarding force and assigned Diplomatic police, working alongside a second PSS to implement established security guidance and protocols. The job holder is the first point of contact for resolving or escalating all day-to-day security-related matters for the Embassy, as raised by staff (155) and drawing on installed protection and communication systems.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?: 

Embassy security (70%)

  • Manage, engage with and supervise the Embassy contracted Guard Force, leading by example, demonstrating professional excellence and upholding the good reputation of the Embassy under the direction of the B3(L) PSM, including to ensure that the guards’ working and leave rosters are arranged in advance;
  • Oversee access control arrangements at the Embassy and, occasionally, at the Ambassador’s Residence;
  • Conduct periodic patrols and security checks of the Embassy and Ambassador’s Residence, including outside normal working hours, maintaining awareness of the physical environment and associated security risks and using sound judgement to note and report any anomalies to the PSM (or PSO);
  • Deputise for the PSM when he is on leave or has other appointments or commitments;
  • Be the front-of-house, first point of contact for any entry or access challenges for unannounced visitors or deliveries.

 

Security control and testing (10%)

  • Oversee the operation and use by the Guard Force of security equipment (Metal Detector Arch, X-ray machine, scanners, etc.) and its regular maintenance;
  • Conduct weekly, recorded tests of the fire, incident and bomb alarms;
  • As directed, conduct the operation and testing of the local emergency radio network(s);
  • Assist the Guard Force to examine all mail for improvised explosive devices, chemical or other threats and that they are properly trained in the scanners operation;
  • Assist with the development of their security awareness, being aware at all times of your personal impact on others and demonstrating perseverance and resolve.
  • Assist in monitoring the operation and maintenance of the Embassy and HMA Residence CCTV system (unclassified area only);
  • Assist in the conduct of regular fire and emergency evacuation drills (in association with the building Management Company) or as directed by the PSO/PSM;

 

Administrative tasks (10%)

  • Supervise the security team roster, including overtime and absences, ensuring that all security positions are occupied as required, providing accurate and timely advice to the PSM of any problems;
  • Operational guarding day-to-day handling and supervision of the security contracts and liaison with external security contracters, as required – handling all information sensitively within the guidelines;
  • Report and record any security incidents or breaches in the unclassified area, based on the evidence to hand;
  • Regular contact and coordination with Embassy Sections and staff and with external providers and other stakeholders, as required.

 

Learning and Development (10%)

  • With the assistance of the PSM, ensure the Guard Force is adequately trained and receive development opportunities;
  • Support the PSM to identify training needs and interventions for all team members and arrange training practices as required;
  • Identify lessons learnt and opportunities for improvement for him/herself and the team;
  • Look further for learning and development opportunities for him/herself and the team and ensure section/area internal training is delivered to the team; 
  • Manage the team effectively in line with Embassy standards and policy/guidelines.
  • Any other duties/activities as required by the Line Manager

Resources managed (staff and expenditure):

Daily supervision of contracted guard force of 12. No direct line management responsibility.

Essential on arrival:

  • High School Diploma;
  • At least 2 years of experience in security environment roles and team supervision positions;
  • Experience in dealing with third party contracts and managing outsourced resources;
  • Proficient using the latest version of MS Office;
  • Spoken and written Spanish at least at Upper Intermediate level;
  • Good customer service skills.

Language requirements: 

Language: Spanish and English 

Level of language required: Good written and spoken English and Spanish, is desirable.

Desirable:

  • Preferred knowledge of security protocols;
  • Spoken and written English.
