Main purpose of job:

To promote Scotland’s energy sector capabilities to Australian stakeholders and develop new export opportunities for Scottish supply chain companies, with a focus on renewable energy, hydrogen and energy transition.

As part of the Global Energy Trade team the Specialist will apply innovative thought to issues, identifying multiple channelsto grow Scottish energy exports by proactively identifying trade opportunities for Scottish companies with key prospects. The Specialist will lead the delivery of complex specialist support to Scottish companies looking to do business in Australia, whilst ensuring focus and delivery against SDI and energy sector objectives.

Roles and responsibilities:

The Jobholder will have contact with a range of stakeholders both internally and externally. They will be involved in providing and analysing complex information, negotiating changes, securing agreement to proposed actions and providing advice to senior management.

Trade Development (60%)

The jobholder will be expected to identify, develop and deliver new business opportunities in Australia for Scottish companies, focusing primarily on renewable energy, hydrogen and energy transition activity. This will include identifying potential gaps in Australian energy supply chains and working with SDI sector colleagues in Scotland to accurately map Scottish supply chain capabilities against Australian requirements. A key aspect of the job will be to build and maintain a commercially relevant network of key stakeholders, including operators, developers, tier-1 contractors, investors, GlobalScots, economic development agencies, regulators, industry and trade bodies. This will require identifying key customers operating in the Australian energy sector and taking a strategic account management role, understanding their procurement methodologies and supply chain requirements, and sharing potential export opportunities with Scottish companies. The jobholder should aspire to become Scottish Development International’s subject matter expert on Australian energy policy and a trusted advisor to Scottish companies on how they could best capture the Australia opportunity. This will involve gathering market intelligence and reporting on trends to SDI sector teams, companies and partners as appropriate. Establishing and maintaining good relationships with the GlobalScot network will also be necessary to ensure that their knowledge and connections are utilised appropriately in support of market intelligence gathering and opportunity identification as well as potentially influencing relevant key decision makers. This role will also require the jobholder to work closely with other UK Government colleagues in Australia and across Asia Pacific on joint initiatives and activities.

Trade Support (20%)

The jobholder will be expected to respond to ad hoc inquiries from Scottish energy companies, including but not limited to requests for information on Australia’s energy landscape, regulatory environment, advising on potential projects and partners, helping to facilitate introductions and arrange meetings.

Marketing and Promotion (20%)

The jobholder will be expected to support colleagues in Scotland with the development and delivery of trade delegations and SDI presence at key industry conferences and shows, organise in-market events and work with media and marketing colleagues in the British High Commission and Consulates General to promote Scottish energy capabilities where and when relevant.

  • Experience of working in the energy or infrastructure sector.
  • Customer relationship management skills, with high levels of confidence and credibility in dealing with senior personnel
  • Diagnostic, strategic challenger, influencer and facilitation skills
  • Ability to apply analytical skills in complex situations
  • Ability to work on own initiative
  • Excellent written skills, IT literate and comfortable using Microsoft packages such as PowerPoint, Excel and Word as well as modern CRM system such as Dynamics
  • Level of language required: English (native fluency)
  • Experience of working on energy projects in Australia.

When international travel resumes, the jobholder is encouraged to visit Scotland annually to learn more about Scottish energy capabilities.

The FCDO and SDI offer comprehensive learning and development opportunities that will be fully available to the jobholder. We regularly run both work area specific training, as well as more general skills development in project management, finance, and leadership. Each year the job holder will be encouraged to use 5 development days to pursue job related and personal development goals.

All staff are required to take a role in the British Consulate General’s crisis preparation and response. Full training will be provided for this and regular opportunities will be available to test and develop your skills.

Flexible hours, working from home and part-time could be possible after discussion. Occasional attendance at evening events will be required as part of this role.

The Energy Sector Trade Specialist will:
