The British Embassy in Paris is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. It is also part of the UK’s France Network (including offices in Lyon, Bordeaux and Marseille and representation to international organisations in Paris (OECD and UNESCO) and Strasbourg (CoE)) and is now looking for an Immigration Liaison Officer – ILO.

The Home Office International Operations  Paris team works closely with a range of French Law Enforcement and airline partners to prevent illegal immigration, document abuse and disrupt Organised Immigration Crime. The British Embassy is currently looking for an Immigration Liaison Officer (ILO).

Home Office International Operations  complete research and development on air and visa threat, sharing intelligence and disrupting organised immigration crime. ILOs are expected to provide duty officer functions, including fielding calls from our key partners and referring cases, as appropriate. Whilst travel across the region may be necessary, most of the time will be spent in office processing information. This includes conducting research, report writing and developing investigations.

We are looking for a person who can demonstrate that they engage with external partners diplomatically – seeing the bigger, longer term picture and not just the immediate result. In addition to France, Home Office International Operations  Paris team also cover Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia.


Roles and responsibilities:

  • Ensuring effective collaboration with host authorities, carriers, FCC and EU partners as well UK partners both in the UK and at post in order to support the delivery of intelligence, crime, interdiction and risk.
  • Building relationships with and providing training to carriers and host authorities in order to ensure inadmissible air passengers do not travel to the UK. Undertaking regular Duty Officer shifts to ensure passengers travelling on forged/counterfeit documents or as imposters, are arrested by local law enforcement. Initialising and developing investigations based on those arrests. 
  • Using collaborative working with the Crime Teams, NCA, overseas law enforcement partners, host country and UK law enforcement agencies to develop intelligence led disruptions of organised immigration crime (OIC) groups targeting the UK
  • Ensure that all relevant intelligence is gathered, assessed and disseminated in line with guidance.
  • Travel around France and North Africa to provide training to stakeholders and on occasion work and support our Home Office International Operations office in Calais.
  • Providing support to stakeholders by being on call out of hours and weekend cover on a rotational basis.
  • Proficiency French and English (both written and spoken, C1 level for CEFR framework);
  • Strong organisational and time management skills – ability to manage competing priorities;
  • Ability to build, maintain and develop relationships with internal and external stakeholders;
  • The ability to work effectively within a small team
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint);
  • High level of discretion and integrity;
  • Flexibility. Occasionally the position may require the job holder to work extended hours or work flexibly, sometimes at short notice.
  • Knowledge of UK/French Law Enforcement;  
  • Previous experience or knowledge of the aviation and/or security sectors;
  • Previous experience of working in an international environment.
