View Vacancy - Science & Innovation Officer, Houston
Main purpose of job:
The Science and Innovation Officer (S&I), based at the British Consulate-General, Houston, is part of a network of S&I officers in the US lead by the head of the Science and Innovation Network in the British Embassy in Washington, DC. The objectives of the global S&I network are:
• Stimulate strategic science collaborations to benefit the UK and deliver wider policy goals
• Improve UK policy based on international experience and emerging opportunities and challenges
• Harness international technology partnerships and investment to grow UK innovation capability
Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:
• Support the Head of the Houston team in maintaining science and innovation relationships across the six-state Houston consulate region of (TX, NM, CO, AR, OK, LA)
• Horizon-scanning developments in science, technology and policy that align with UK interests
• Compilation of regular, high-quality reports for senior UK stakeholders. These include scientists, learned societies, policy makers, government ministers and Parliament
• Support planning & logistics of high-level visits and meetings relating to science and innovation
• Management of complex science and innovation-focussed projects including symposia, workshops, and delegations
• Monitoring outcomes and communicating the impact of our work through various channels
• Supporting broader Consulate initiatives in support of UK prosperity
• Management of programme & Houston team budgets
- 1-3 years of related professional experience
- Good academic and/or corporate background in science or policy fields
- Proven interpersonal skills, capable of effectively interacting with members of the public, science community, and senior government officials
- Good writing and communication skills with the ability to convey complex material in simplified formats tailored to a range of audiences
- Effective team player capable with working with local and regional teams virtually
Language requirements:
Language: English
Level of language required: highly proficient
- Knowledge of UK science and innovation strengths and capabilities is a plus but not required
Learning and development opportunities (and any specific training courses to be completed):
- Opportunities for relevant training and development will be available, including the possibility of work shadowing in other US S&I posts
- A strong performing jobholder will also be given the opportunity to travel to the UK to meet relevant stakeholders and gain first-hand experience of the UK science and innovation policy context and ecosystem
