Main purpose of job:

You will work with the Country Director as an integral part of the British High Commission Mutual Prosperity team in Nairobi, in pursuit of the objectives set out in DIT’s Regional Trade Plan for Africa and Country Plan for Kenya. As Deputy Country Director, you will lead the team’s commercial work, advising UK investors and exporters to help them realise their ambitions, leading ambitious awareness-building campaigns among UK businesses in priority sectors, holding key relationships within the Government of Kenya and supporting UK companies already in the market to continue to operate successfully. In addition to this, you will have responsibility for the day-to-day operational management of the wider DIT-Kenya team.

Context:

The Department for International Trade (DIT) is the Trade Promotion and Negotiation Organisation for the UK. We promote UK businesses overseas and attract foreign investment to our shores. We have 3,000 staff across the globe in over 100 countries. Our aspiration is to address some of the challenges facing the UK, by helping British businesses to internationalise and grow overseas.  DIT Africa is one of the nine DIT global networks and is led by John Humphrey HM Trade Commissioner (HMTC) for Africa. The Africa Region is exciting and energising and UK firms have a strong presence here, making the UK the second largest investor on the continent. With some of the strongest growing economies in the world and booming population growth there are numerous more opportunities for UK firms; from tech start-ups in the West to infrastructure in the East. The Network’s role is to promote these opportunities and position the UK as the continent’s number one trading partner and investor.

UK in Kenya

Our economic relationship with Kenya is based on Mutual Prosperity and is key cornerstone of our strategic partnership, underpinning our wider work on climate, sustainable development, health, science and technology.  The United Kingdom is one of Kenya's largest and most important foreign investors, and British companies are amongst the country’s largest taxpayers. An estimated 150 British enterprises are currently in Kenya, and bilateral trade between Kenya and the United Kingdom is estimated to be worth GBP 1.1 billion (KES 167 billion). Over 250,000 Kenyans are directly employed by British organisations. Kenya and the United Kingdom have a long history of friendship and collaboration in crucial areas such as education, trade and investment.  British businesses in Kenya are spread across multiple sectors and directly or indirectly contribute to the wider value chain of the economy, and there are opportunities across agriculture, infrastructure, energy, health, education, and financial services.  The UK-Kenya Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) ratified in 2021, ensures companies operating in Kenya continue to benefit from the pre-Brexit duty-free access to the UK market and support jobs and economic development in Kenya. We are in the process of implementing the EPA agreement which will be a great platform for an enhanced economic partnership with the Government of Kenya.
