The Press and Communications team of the British Embassy in Mexico City is recruiting a Communications Officer for DIT Mexico. The Department for International Trade (DIT) is the UK Government’s ministry dealing with Trade and Investment. Its role in Mexico is to encourage British companies to export to Mexico, whether directly or via a distributor and to encourage Mexican companies to invest in the UK. As the Communications Officer you would be expected to support our ten high value campaigns (HVCs): Automotive, Defence, Energy, Infrastructure, Food and Drink, Agritech, Mining, Education, Healthcare, and Life Sciences, to ensure excellent media coverage for UK companies and their products and services, while promoting DIT to a British and Mexican audience.

Roles and responsibilities:

Working closely with the rest of the team, the selected candidate will be mainly responsible for:

  • Developing and implementing communication strategies, promotional projects, tools and campaigns to raise the UK profile as an ideal business partner in Mexico, and help ensure that business people in the UK have an accurate understanding of modern Mexico and the many opportunities this fast developing economy offers to British exporters.
  • Contributing to digital content for DIT Mexico, ensuring it is kept accurate and up to date and informs British companies of the opportunities in Mexico available to them.
  • Working with the London DIT Press Office to seek to maximise positive media coverage of Mexico in the British media, including during high level visits to and from the UK as well as supporting UK companies obtain press coverage in Mexico, organising press conferences at the Embassy for companies to launch their products or services in the Mexican market, among other marketing activities.
  • Monitoring UK and Mexican media (including social media) and producing reports to keep the staff in Mexico and London informed on relevant commercial issues, especially in our priority sectors.
  • Distributing and occasionally producing content (like articles, press releases, blogs, etc.) in order to inform the media about DIT activities and key messages. He/she will also have the opportunity to contribute with original content to our permanent communications channels, like the Ambassador’s weekly column and DIT bulletin.
  • Support the Press and Communications team with different cross-Embassy projects (organising events, hiring providers, inviting and managing press, providing logistical support for the organisation of media / PR events, etc.)
  • Working closely with Mexico’s GREAT Marketing Manager to ensure coordination of activity with the Trade teams.
  • Maintaining a network of contacts, in particular commercial and trade press.
  • Line management of an intern.

  

Resources managed:

  • One intern. He / She will be in charge of his/her projects’ budgets.
  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism or a similar area.
  • Previous experience in communications – including Public Relations and Media handling.
  • Previous Trade and Investment experience.
  • Excellent prioritisation and organisational skills.
  • Competent writing and synthesising skills.
  • Good communications skills.
  • A proactive attitude is essential.
  • Strong customer focus, teamwork and interpersonal skills.
  • Previous experience of procurement in a marketing and communications environment is highly desirable, as well as experience in the organisation of promotional events and activities.
  • Community management experience and social media understanding.
  • Experience of effectively managing a network of contacts with a view to assisting in the achievement of objectives would be a strong advantage.
  • Experience of managing budgets.

The elected candidate would on occasion be required to lead press tours to the UK to show Mexican press firsthand the UK offer. He/She would be expected to work closely with the trade and investment teams to ensure our interventions generate leads for the teams. He/She will need to provide the press and PR input to their events.

Providing a quality service to your customers is a must, and having and/or building key contacts with key media stakeholders will be a top priority.

You will need to attend DIT induction and International Communication Skills.
