Main purpose of job

The Digital Communications Manager is a key member of Communications Team and will be responsible for managing the digital media presence and activity for the British Embassy Washington, working to reach target audience with key messages about the work of the UK government in our host country.

The successful candidate will have experience planning, executing and evaluating successful digital campaigns; experience in the management of social media channels; experience working with partners to deliver and amplify online campaigns; and be up to date on the latest digital trends and developments.

Copywriting, photography, video and graphic design skills would also be highly valued.

What will the jobholder be expected to achieve?

  • Develop and manage channel strategies for all local social media channels to ensure our channels are working to reach and engage with the right target audiences in support of specific policy objectives.
  • Work with Embassy colleagues in the development of local communication strategies (using the OASIS framework) and plan and deliver all digital aspects of those campaigns.
  • Work with colleagues in both the US and elsewhere to provide analysis on online perceptions of the UK, and report more broadly on online trends.
  • Ensure all digital channels are used effectively to react and respond to live global and local events, including crisis situations.
  • Write, create, and edit digital content, including tweets, blog posts, video, and Facebook updates.  You would line manage an officer to help deliver this day-to-day work.
  • Lead and build the Embassy’s engagement with the digital community, including with counterparts in the US and other Embassies, and partner organisations.
  • Provide additional support to the Embassy’s broader public diplomacy efforts, including idea generation and content development.
  • Serve as senior editor for the UK and USA section of gov.uk
  • Advise and train colleagues in the US network on applying digital diplomacy to help achieve communication and public diplomacy goals.
  • Be responsible for all reputational aspects of our online persona ensuring all output adheres to UK Government codes of conduct and our engagement with members of the public, particularly British Nationals in need of assistance, is exemplary at all times.
  • This role will require some out of hours work, including weekends.

Line Management of 1 staff member.  This role is not a budget holder.

Essential on arrival

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a related field.
  • Minimum 3+ years of relevant experience in digital media and communications.
  • Experience of managing social media platforms, including developing channel strategies, audience profiling and community building.
  • Experience developing and delivering strategic campaigns (ideally both paid and non-paid) to advance policy or other formal objectives.
  • Experience of using data analytics to evaluate performance of social media channels and campaigns (specific experience of Brandwatch, Newswhip, Audiense or similar would be highly valued).
  • Ability to work with external partners and manage suppliers and contractors.
  • Excellent writing skills with exceptional spelling, grammar, punctuation, and knowledge of how to write for the web and social media.
  • Direct experience or a strong understanding of video filming and production.
  • Direct experience or a strong understanding of producing and editing photography and visual media for social media.
  • Experience working within a large organisation’s brand guidelines and codes of conduct.
