Science and Innovation

Main purpose of job:

To work in the Science and Innovation Team supporting the communications strategy under the supervision of the Science and Innovation Officer, supporting the team to communicate the impact of the programmes developed under the Newton and GCR Funds. The jobholder will assist the team organising internal and external comms activities, including support in virtual and face-to-face events.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

1.    External and Internal Communications (40%)

  • Liaise with the comms champions in order to be updated in requirements and tools to communicate S&I activities
  • Support the team in gathering the information needed to implement the S&I comms strategy
  • Keep track of comms matrix to be able to advice when information is not available nor updated
  • Monitor that S&I comms pieces are published according to guidelines in the matrix
  • Establish a strategy to work in conjunction with other comms assistants and champions
  • Suggest innovative ways to communicate the impact of S&I funds in Colombia 

2.    Production of Newton Fund and GCRF Reports (40%)

  • Support the team in collecting the information needed to produce the Newton and GCRF reports
  • Monitor the progress of the activities included in both Reports Implementation Plans
  • Update the Reports Implementation Plans according to meetings and agreements
  • Suggest innovative ideas to design both reports ( physical and digital)  

3.    Event Support (10%)

  • Support the Team in planning the comms strategy for the Doing Science with Colombia event
  • Support the Team in the implementation of the Comms strategy for Doing Science with Colombia event
  • Support the Team in monitoring and evaluating the impact of the comms strategy for the DSWC event

4.    Administrative Work (10%)

  • Keep record (both physical and digital) of the expenditures and Purchase Orders created
  • Use of designated comms tools to achieve results
  • To  work closely with different areas of the Embassy in order to ensure good coordination and optimise the impact of each virtual event, project, communication piece or policy work

5.  To actively engage in the wider Embassy activities, participate in committees and events.

6.   Any other task that might be required as part of the team’s activities.

  • Currently enrolled in the last semesters of a university degree in Social Communications or other related fields (journalism, advertising, etc.)
  • Available for 6 months since the starting day
  • Available to work sporadically on nights and weekends when there are events
  • Good knowledge of photography and video-editing software
  • Responsible, well organised and committed to the job
  • Good knowledge of tools to edit digital and printed documents
  • Sociable, able to interact and collaborate with different teams
  • Excellent team work and communications skills
  • Works well under pressure and against deadlines, able to deal effectively with stressful and difficult situations
  • Language: fluent (proficient) written and spoken English and Spanish
  • Level of language required: between B1 and C1 (under the CEFRL or equivalent)
  • Experience in project delivery
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Graphic design skills

Must have the legal status to live and work in Colombia.

Internship is a fixed-term role for 6 months. 

Working hours: Monday to Thursday: 8:30 a.m - 5:00 p.m and Friday: 8:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Currently, work is remote. Eventually, intern will be expected to go into the Embassy. 

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.

The successful candidate must be in the last year of undergraduate studies in a related field with a strong background in communications and social media, as well as a demonstrated passion for Science and Innovation issues. It is mandatory that the candidates are students with availability of at least 6 months before their graduation to complete the internship. The internship must be a requirement for obtaining the degree.
