Main purpose of job:

 

To i) provide expert policy advice, analysis and reporting on key multilateral and bilateral foreign policy issues and ii) design, manage and deliver discrete projects and visits that assist the UK Government’s delivery of the UK’s foreign policy agenda.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

This role lies at the heart of promoting the UK’s foreign policy and related interests in Mexico. The job holder will provide expert analysis, advice and reporting to senior Embassy staff and the UK Government in London on a variety of foreign policy issues, including (but not limited to) Mexico’s policy towards the UN, Latin America, the Falkland Islands and international human rights issues. The successful applicant will also seek funding for, design and deliver discrete projects in support of UK foreign policy priorities. In addition, the job holder will support the wider Political, Press & Public Affairs Team and will therefore need to be flexible in responding to team priorities; for example, supporting high level visits and assisting the Domestic Politics team when necessary.  The British Embassy’s mission is to build a UK-Mexico partnership which makes us and the world more prosperous and secure. The successful candidate will make a decisive contribution to that effort.

Working with the Second Secretary Political, you will form part of the busy and high-profile Political, Press & Public Affairs Team. There is considerable potential for the job holder to use and expand their networking skills to seek ways in which the UK and Mexico can work together and better understand each other on issues that are of crucial importance to the international community. The job holder will undertake the following key responsibilities:

  • Produce high quality written analysis and reporting on live foreign policy issues
  • Create and maintain a network of knowledgeable and influential external stakeholders, including in the Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores, academia and civil society, to help inform their analysis and deliver UK objectives

  • Respond flexibly to changing priorities in the team, including by taking on additional
  • work outside the usual remit of the Foreign Policy Team
  • Contribute to the smooth running of the broader Embassy through participation in corporate initiatives and forming part of the Embassy’s crisis response  

We We are looking for a proactive, creative self-starter with strong interpersonal skills who has the ability to learn quickly.  You must have excellent communication skills, both in terms of drafting political analysis and building relationships. Spoken and written English and Spanish to a high level is essential. You must be able to analyse and interpret international political developments and report them clearly and concisely to a senior Embassy and London audience.





 

  • Essential on arrival:

     

    • Detailed knowledge, understanding and interest in key international policy issues and diplomacy.
    • Project experience – including the ability to work with a wide range of people, and experience on project management.
    • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.
    • Education to undergraduate level in a relevant subject (Political Science, International Relations, Development, Sociology or Economics etc).
    • Spoken and written English and Spamish to a high level is essential.
  •  

    Desirable:

     

    • Good contacts within the Mexican system, particularly in the areas of foreign policy.
    • Previous experience working in the government sector or with NGOs.
    • Previous professional experience of political risk analysis or governmental affairs.
    • Education to postgraduate level in a relevant subject (Political Science, International Relations, Development, Sociology or Economics).
