The British Embassy in Hungary is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. 

We are now looking for up to two paid Interns to work with the Embassy’s Policy Team to help to deliver specific additional work over the coming months.  The successful candidates should be university students or recent graduates who have limited work experience, and an interest in building up career experience in a field related to the Embassy's activities.

The role will focus on supporting projects related to the Embassy’s Bilateral Strategy and contributing to the Embassy’s Justice and Home Affairs and Foreign Policy work. In particular, the role will focus on providing administrative and logistical support to the Embassy’s Policy Team, and the successful candidates should expect the role to consist largely of this type of work.

This internship is also a good opportunity to gain experience of working in a fast paced international policy environment in preparation for a career in this field.

The successful candidates will also have the opportunity to carry out Learning and Development activities in line with their areas of interest, supported by their Mentor.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Providing administrative and logistical support for Embassy projects, including making travel and accommodation bookings, keeping track of budgets and communicating with contacts, stakeholders and customers;
  • Providing support to Embassy officials on work strands related to the Embassy’s Bilateral Strategy, Justice and Home Affairs and foreign policy portfolios. Help the Embassy’s Policy Team with stakeholder mapping;
  • Establishing and maintaining good relationships within the Embassy, as well as with external stakeholders, customers and suppliers;
  • Writing meeting records and other summaries;
  • Carrying out Learning & Development activities around the successful candidate’s area of policy interest, agreed with the Intern’s Mentor at the beginning of the internship;
  • Providing other logistical support to the Team, including administrative tasks.

  • Good command of written and spoken English and fluent Hungarian;
  • Current University student or recent (within two years) graduate;
  • Interest in a career in international relations or policy;
  • Ability to learn quickly;
  • Team player but also ability to work independently with minimum supervision;
  • Enthusiasm and flexibility;
  • Solid command of Microsoft Office.

  • Exposure to and/or participation in formal events, receptions or presentations

This is an internship placement of 35h per week and duration of 3 months. Depending on the availability of the successful candidates, we will consider different working patterns.

The Intern will be in receipt of the appropriate state minimum salary, paid on a pro-rata basis if engaged part-time. The amount is subject to the labour law at the time, but for information, in 2018, the minimum full-time wage is HUF 138,000 per month, or HUF 180,500 for those who hold a higher school or degree level, or above, standard of education.

The intern will need to arrange and pay for his or her own travel, accommodation, as well as any other costs.

The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background check and security clearance. You must have pre-existing work authorisation for Hungary in order to apply.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy are subject to terms and conditions of service according to Hungarian employment law.
