Main purpose of job:

The British Embassy in Santo Domingo is seeking an enthusiastic and fast-learning intern to provide support to the Political and Communications team across the range of their work. This will include a wide range of work, from helping to generate comms assets, to helping research and draft briefing, to support for events. This is a great opportunity for somebody early in their career to get experience of working in an international environment and an insight into the work of an Embassy.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?

The Political intern will work across the work of the  Political and Communications team, helping with a wide variety of tasks and projects and getting experience of the range of work that we carry out in the Embassy.

 

Duties are likely to include

· Practical and logistical support for Embassy political team events and activities

· Drafting and research for political and communications work

· Administrative support to projects run by the Embassy as needed, including arranging visits (normally by the Ambassador or Deputy Head of Mission)

· Supporting meetings and visits for senior staff

· Drafting correspondence and translating documents

· Liaising with the Residence Manager on Embassy events – guest lists, contact details etc.

· Maintaining and updating the Embassy’s political contact database

· Assisting with the Daily News Report

· Additional tasks as required

This is a varied role, with the opportunity to get experience in an unusually broad mix of areas of administrative support. An excellent suite of online training is available and the job-holder is expected to commit to personal learning and development as part of the role.

The Embassy’s working language is English.

Essential:  

· Fluent Spanish and English, spoken and written.

· Currently studying or graduated from a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject, such as Politics, Media or International Relations

· Excellent understanding of  Dominican politics and media

· An interest in international politics and in the UK

· Strong IT skills and confidence in Office Applications.

· Excellent communication skills

· Ability to work as a team player in a fast moving environment

· Excellent organizational and time managment skills

· Good attention to detail


Must have the legal right to work in the Dominican Republic

Desirable:

· Prior experience working in communications or an international environment.

The job will normally be based in the British Embassy Santo Domingo. However, for the first months, the jobholder will also be working remotely for some of the time in line with the Embassy’s COVID policy.

The position requires pre-existing legal status to live and work in the Dominican Republic and will be subject to satisfactory reference checks and successful receipt of security clearances
