The British Consulate-General Milan and British Embassy in Rome are part of a worldwide Government network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas.

Invest Northern Ireland (Invest NI) (www.investni.com) is Northern Ireland’s principal business development agency. Its role is to bring greater economic benefit and prosperity to the region by supporting the development of Northern Irish businesses locally and internationally.  Invest NI currently has a  presence in Western Europe and is seeking to expand its operations in the region. This is a new business development role, which will based in the British Consulate, Milan.

This is a fixed-term position until 31 March 2023 with the possibility of contract extension depending on performance and available funding.

What is this role all about?

This trade-focused role and the appointed candidate will be responsible for developing and delivering the trade strategy for the Italian market and will have an opportunity to engage with a range of client companies in order to help them identify and deliver trade opportunities and secure sales in the market by:

  • providing market knowledge and introductions for Northern Ireland exporters

  • supporting Northern Ireland companies in exporting to the Italian market

  • raising awareness of Northern Irish goods and services

Working as part of the European and GB team, you will report to the Regional Director, who is based in Invest NI’s Madrid office.

You will have an opportunity to travel within Italy, to Northern Ireland and other countries, in order to develop sector and market knowledge, build out your contacts base and undertake training, meet clients or attend internal meetings, as required by the management team.

The job holder is also expected to actively engage in corporate activities and initiatives in the Italy Network.


Our ideal candidate shows:    

  • University degree or equivalent

  • Over 6 years of recent business development experience in a private or public sector organisation

  • A sound understanding of the Italian market, commercial knowledge and business sector knowledge, particularly in sectors such as Advanced Engineering & Manufacturing, Aerospace, Technology, and Life & Health Sciences

  • Proficient language skills both in English and Italian

  • Recent experience in undertaking market research, analysing market data, preparing reports, presenting information to team/clients and helping them to achieve positive business outcomes

  • Good networking skills, a recent successful track record in developing and maintaining relationships with senior executives, industry leaders and government officials to achieve positive business outcomes

  • Attention to detail, excellent organisational, IT and administrative skills

  • Ability to work at pace and independently as part of a remote team

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office (Word/Excel/PowerPoint)

It will be a plus

  • Knowledge of the key business sectors and economic drivers in Northern Ireland, including EU Exit and Covid pandemic impact;

  • Experience in supporting companies doing business in or exporting to Italy.

This job will be based in Milan.

This is a full-time temporary position with a contract of 12 months with possibility of renewal by mutual consent, graded HEO according to the FCDO grading structure.

The annual gross salary is Euro 56,116. The salary is paid monthly 14 times per year including € 10.33 EDR paid 13 times per year, with double salary payments in June and December. If working less than a full calendar year, the additional salary payments will be pro-rata.

Working hours are 35 hrs per week Monday to Friday typically from 09.00 – 17.00, with some flexibility.

The starting date may be delayed depending on circumstances at the time and this will be agreed with the selected candidate.

The appointment is subject to security clearance, professional background check and the successful completion of a 5 month probationary period.

All staff employed by the British Consulate General are subject to Italian income tax (IRPEF). However the administration of these tax payments will vary depending on nationality.

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Italian State Social Security Scheme. Staff recruited locally by the British Consulate General are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Italian employment law.

Visa/work permit requirements: candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Italy and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
