Main purpose of job:

The jobholder will carry out daily driving duties and support the efficient functioning of the High Commission. The successful applicant will be responsible for providing a safe, friendly and effective service to High Commission staff and official visitors when required. This includes providing professional and safe driver services, and efficient messenger and administrative support.

The jobholder will be a 'face' of our High Commission and will do more than just a 'driving job'; you must be smart, presentable, customer-focused and able to show initiative.

 

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Driving High Commission officials to meetings, appointments and functions outside the High Commission, and providing transport for official visitors.
  • Distributing letters and invitations; carrying out errands, including paying bills and undertaking banking transactions on behalf of the High Commission.
  • Responsibility for vehicle care; undertaking daily vehicle cheeking of tyres, hydraulic (brake) fluid, engine oil, radiator and battery levels and verifying the rear and front lights including indicator and brake lights are in good working order.
  • Ensuring the High Commission vehicles are always clean, refuelled, and in good running condition and that regular maintenance schedules are followed.
  • Overseeing routine and urgent maintenance of vehicles. Working with local garages to ensure proactive maintenance is completed in a timely and proper manner in order to ensure minimum down time of High Commission vehicles.
  • Maintaining a daily log of all journeys and ensuring that passengers complete the Vehicle Journey Log after their trip is over.
  • Reporting any vehicle accidents and/or malfunctions to the Corporate Services Manager.

Further tasks as and when required in support of the Corporate Services team and wider High Commission as a whole.

  • A clean current driving licence
  • Excellent driving skills with attention to safety
  • At least three years recent experience of driving in The Gambia
  • A good working knowledge of Banjul and the Kombos
  • Able to read and write in English
  • Fluent in spoken English
  • Good knowledge of basic car maintenance and mechanical principles
  • High level of personal integrity, honesty and discretion
  • Proven ability to concentrate and drive safely in different driving conditions and terrains.
  • Knowledge of local driving laws and traffic patterns
  • Good personal appearance and hygiene, i.e. a change of uniforms is required at least twice a week
