As a Dialogue Partner of ASEAN, the UK’s engagement with the bloc continues to increase. The UK Mission to ASEAN is looking for a suitably qualified and professional Policy Assistant. The job holder will be part of two teams within the UK Mission to ASEAN, namely the Political-Security and Socio-Cultural teams. Primarily, the job holder will facilitate the work of both teams, including with budget management and forecasting, travel and meeting arrangements, engagements with external partners, logistical arrangements for key meetings, visits of ministers and senior officials. The job holder will be expected to develop responsibility for policy areas within the ASEAN-UK Plan of Action so there will be opportunities to develop policy skills, support and deputise for colleagues when required and to write reports and analyses. The job holder will also be required to work closely with the Ambassador’s PA.

The successful candidate will be required to handle a broad range of tasks, have a flexible attitude and be able to work with a significant autonomy. Roles and responsibilities:

  • Writing and analysis: working closely with the Political Officer to write the weekly ASEAN update and reports on key ASEAN meetings, which are circulated across the region and the UK, and contribute to briefings for UK Ministers, diplomats and other visiting VIPs.
  • Knowledge: build knowledge on ASEAN and be able to share information and policy recommendations with others quickly and concisely through written analyses and oral briefings.
  • Logistics: lead on  visit programmes, coordinate budget management and forecasting for the UK Mission to ASEAN and offer policy advice and recommendations and monitor and report on implementation.
  • Contact building:  maintain a network of contacts across government, politics, academia, think-tanks and relevant UK stakeholders to provide accurate information on key developments relevant to the two teams.
  • Deputise for colleagues where needed.
  • Corporate: take part at the Embassy’s extensive social and corporate activities.
  • University graduate in a relevant subject, such as International Relations or Social Sciences, or equivalent experience.
  • Excellent administration and organisational skills.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English; ability to draft a wide range of correspondence.
  • Flexibility and resilience under pressure.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, able to work with people of different levels and background.
  • Proactive and willing to take initiative.
  • Proficient in MS Office applications.
  • Understanding of ASEAN and multilateralism
