The UK’s Department for International Trade (DIT) has overall responsibility for promoting UK trade across the world and attracting foreign investment to our economy. We are a specialised government body with responsibility for negotiating international trade policy, supporting business, and delivering an outward-looking trade diplomacy strategy.

DIT USA works closely with DIT headquarters in London, with related agencies in the UK and with representatives of the English Regions and the UK’s Devolved Administrations in North America, to assist North America companies looking to invest in the UK and help UK companies identify opportunities to trade with North America (see www.gov.uk/DIT).

The post advertised is for a Trade & Investment Associate (TIA) based at the British Consulate in Boston. Reporting to the Sector Director for Capital Investment – North America, the TIA will work as part of a team located across North America with responsibility for driving large scale and growth capital investment from the Unites States and Canada into all regions of the UK. The job holder will support the Sector Director and broader Capital Investment team in: a) setting strategic priorities, identifying new market opportunities and delivering the Capital Investment sector plan for North America; b) presenting the UK value story and DIT proposition to prospective and existing investors across a broad range of investor categories, industry verticals and asset classes; c) tracking and analysing individual investment projects, investor pipeline, and overall sector performance; d) project managing investment missions and other promotional events that showcase case capital investment opportunities in the UK; e) organising high profile visits, such as Ministerial and VIP delegations.

To be successful, the job holder will need to be strategic, analytical, and resourceful. S/he/they will have exceptional organisational and relationship management skills, the ability to analyse data and emerging market trends, as well as the creativity and communications skills to convey compelling and impactful messages to internal and external audiences. As circumstances permit, s/he/they will be required to attend official functions and undertake travel.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Support strong relationships with major US and Canadian capital investors, including venture capital and private equity firms, real estate developers and investment trusts, public sector pension funds, university endowments and philanthropic foundations.  
  • Monitor trends and ongoing developments, both in the capital investment sector, as well as focus industry verticals (such as clean energy and technology; healthcare and life sciences; real estate and infrastructure; sports and entertainment). Understand and communicate UK government strategy in relevant sectors. 
  • Proactively research and identify investors with strategies and portfolios aligned with UK government priorities who are interested in establishing or expanding operations in the UK. Make initial contact, schedule meetings, and set up visit programmes where appropriate. Attend meetings, prepare readouts, and support the management of client relationships.
  • Partner with the Sector Director to prepare strategy and planning documents, with Capital Investment team colleagues on investor presentations, and with Marketing campaign managers on promotional collateral and communications.
  • Provide operational and administrative support by maintaining client and project databases. Leverage existing CRM capabilities to track and analyse investment project progression, ongoing investor pipeline development and management, and overall sector performance against annual targets.  
  • Project manage the organisation of investment missions, seminars, webinars, receptions and other promotional events.
  • Support visits by senior UK government officials by helping to secure high-level meetings, organising activities, and preparing briefing materials.
  • Undertake occasional travel in the US, Canada and the UK.

Resources managed (staff and expenditure):

No management responsibility. Support Sector Director in managing the Business Development Fund budget.

  • At least 3 years of relevant professional experience, ideally with a major corporation or investment firm.
  • Strong project management skills and demonstrated ability to communicate with companies/organisations effectively and credibly at a senior level.
  • Proactive, self-starting approach to work, with the comfort and confidence to work independently and show initiative, often with limited day-to-day supervision, while also operating as part of a wider team.
  • Strong networking skills and ability to navigate a complex, matrixed environment.
  • The ability to organise, prioritise and manage tasks in a deadline sensitive environment. Attention to detail, good follow up discipline, and proof reading skills.
  • Strong communication (oral and written) skills, including excellent research ability, reading comprehension and topical summary skills.
  • Excellent research skills, with an ability to provide clear, concise summaries and respond to ad hoc requests at short notice using databases and other information sources.
  • Proficiency in standard Microsoft applications and client relationship management software, with the ability to run management information reports and conduct data analysis.
  • Valid passport; the ability to attend official functions outside of office hours; and the ability to undertake domestic and international air travel, including overnight stays, once CV-19 pandemic restrictions are lifted and health/safety circumstances are considered.
  • Interest and familiarity with both the US and the UK business environments is highly desirable.

Learning and development opportunities:

The job holder will have the ability to avail of internal and external training facilitated and paid for by DIT budget.

Working patterns:

DIT Boston employees are temporarily working remotely under the health and safety guidance from the state of Massachusetts. However, flexible working has typically been permissible within DIT Boston, and a variety of working patterns will be open for discussion once office repopulation is phased back in.

  • Able to be located in/relocate to, the Boston area.
  • Be willing to undertake occasional travel domestically in the US and occasional international travel to Canada and the UK once health/safety measures allow.
  • Be willing to represent DIT and the British Consulate at external functions (both during working hours and evenings).
