Main purpose of job:

The British Embassy Office in Niamey is part of a worldwide network representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas.  Our aim is for the UK to be an energetic player in the region, working together with the EU, UN and other partners to help build a safe, secure, and well-governed region which can prepare and adapt to future challenges.  Our presence is growing in Niamey with the opening of a new embassy. 

The Political Officer role is key to increasing the UK’s understanding of Niger, its government, the political players and current issues such as the Electoral Process, Governance, Human Rights and Stabilisation as well as in the wider Sahel and on the UN Security Council.

Increasing the awareness and promoting the work the UK in Niger and the Sahel is a key part of the role.

 

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Researching and reporting on political and international issues.  Understanding which issues are of greatest importance to the UK
  • Building a network of contacts across the Nigerien society: Government, think tanks, academic and business communities, engaging with these contacts to gather information and to lobby on behalf of the UK
  • Organizing events in line with Embassy priorities.   Arranging and helping others to arrange visits for UK Ministers, senior officials and Parliamentarians
  • Co-ordinating policy with Niger on international issues and lobbying on key priorities for the UK.  As Niger takes up its two-year seat on the UN Security Council, this will be a key time for international synchronisation
  • Seeking opportunities for /and maximising bilateral cooperation between the UK and Niger
  • Tracking and providing high quality analysis on international and domestic policy issues and their implications for UK interests

  • Essential on arrival: A deep understanding of Nigerien politics and its international priorities
  • Knowledge of the UK and understanding of its international priorities
  • Experience of working in a governmental or international environment
  • A flexible attitude and ability to switch easily between dossiers
  • Proven ability to prioritise, handle multiple tasks and respond quickly to changing circumstances
  • Demonstrable team player skills
  • IT Skills, Microsoft Office applications eg Word, Excel, Powerpoint

There are learning and development opportunities as well as opportunity to travel to the UK.

 

Working patterns:   

Working hours are from 8:00am to 16:30 Monday to Thursday and 8:00 to 12:30 on Fridays.  A 36 hour week.  Annual leave is 24 days in addition to pre-determined public holidays.
